Factors You May Not Know Are Affecting Your Mental Health

Показать описание
The social determinants of mental health are the various social and environmental factors that contribute to a person’s mental health. Our society has such a strong focus on medicine as a treatment that these other important social factors are often overlooked. Often these social determinants of mental health aren’t in the control of the person, but better understanding them can help inform policy decision making and advocacy.

Going to the gym and working out 4-5 times a week helped me more than 10 years worth of antidepressants and antipsychotics did. I did WONDERS for my physical health AND mental health. I never thought just getting up and moving your body would do so much for my mind.

Glad to see early childhood traumas brought into the conversation around mental health.

Thank you so much for mentioning the effect of intergenerational trauma on indigenous people! That was a welcome surprise. There is a whole other type of trauma passed down to the descendents of a genocide. I can speak from personal experience. It's probably very similar for black people who live in this country and went through a sort of cultural genocide because of slavery. Thank you so much for including this idea!

Talking about gender, I think I'm non-binary. I hate to say that, cause I've always thought that concept doesn't make sense, and if it wasn't happening to me I'd be convinced it doesn't exist at all. I just keep pushing it to the side and living my life, and now your video reminded me that gender identity acceptance can affect good mental health. Goddamit. Good video btw.

Just discovered this channel, thank you so much for the work you do! You are really giving a positive voice to people with invisible illnesses. Media depictions of poor mental health are pretty awful and contribute to the stigmatization of people experiencing these conditions. I am following, and will be recommending this channel to others!

Thank you so much for articulating how imperialism and capitalism have and continue to deteriorate our mental health, not just our physical and economic living conditions. We need to be talking about this now more than ever.

Oh man I've had to completely cut out refined sugar, I ate candy for a couple days after Halloween and I had a panic attack/breakdown every single day until I stopped.

A great list. It really well demonstrates how socioeconomic status affects mental health -- and not just for those of us with "disordered" mental health, but everyone. I'd love to see you dive more deeply into some of these topics, especially social exclusion and the social safety net, which have particular relevance with the pandemic.
