Electromagnetic Railgun Firing

Watch this electromagnetic railgun in action.
Railguns do away with the use of conventional explosives, instead using an incredibly powerful electric current to launch projectiles far and fast.
In 2007, the US Navy tested an electromagnetic railgun by firing it at a world record 10.64 megajoules and the seven pound test slug attained an incredible muzzle velocity of 8,268 feet per second.
It was estimated that the same model could spew out 20 slugs in less than one minute and hit targets up to 63 nautical miles away.
In 2021 though, the U.S. Navy pulled the plug on the much-hyped electromagnetic railgun, shifting resources to the development of hypersonic missiles and other high-tech weapons instead.

Love how he left out the fact that the railgun literally shredded itself every single shot

The issue with the railgun is that its way too powerful for its own good and literally tears itself apart after a couple shots

We are gonna need those rail guns when the Covenant attacks.

"They pulled the plug on it" probably means that in 7 years they gonna pull up to a warzone with one that shoots darts half the size of power poles at 200 rpm

A railgun is an unbelievably powerful projectile weapon. So powerful in fact, that it rips itself apart. A coilgun is a similar concept, but relies on magnetic fields instead and supposedly doesn't tear itself apart. However, I'm not certain it can obtain the same power level as the railgun.

Pulled the plug? So they say. An enemy will soon feel the wrath of this weapon.

This didn't work out.

BUT! The research on the rounds lead to advances in normal artillery rounds that has extended ranges massively.

So they didn't manage to extend the barrel life to acceptable levels.
That's too bad, but one day they'll be able to and I really hope it'll be the US who manages it.
The rail gun will be a game changer in naval warfare, especially if you increase output further beyond something like 10 MJ.

So we’re behind in Hypersonic tech, but ahead in Railguns, so we just scrapped the railguns to play catch-up?!?

Also love how this makes it all sound like the US navy developed all of this this tech and they use videos of BAE Systems (British Aerospace)

Refund the railgun!!! We need orbital MAC stations for impact defense!

For those wondering: thats Mach 10.8 at sea level.

Given that they always lie about what they can actually do: probably closer to mach 12 - 14.

Good luck dodging that.

(And youd want to, seeing as that would have a kenetic enegy dump of approximately 10, 100, 000J, or for reference: the equavlent impact of 634 50 cal machine gun rounds all hitting the same point, simultaneously)

Finally... a reason to bring heavy battleships back.

I remember being out where there going through school when they were testing it. Whole base shook and lights in the schoolhouse flickered. Was always cool to hear it go off when they fired it!

I'll wait for the hand-gun and rifle versions .😎👍

I would surmise but if you’re going to shoot down a hypersonic missile you would at least need a hyper sonic slug

Nothing screams more high tech than a railgun
