United States Navy's $500 Million Rail Gun, a Hypersonic Cannon Capable Of Mach 7 #shorts

The lethal hypersonic cannon you're witnessing is an electromagnetic rail gun, which can fire projectiles at a speed of 5400 mph. In conventional weapons, the ammunition is usually launched using explosives or propellant, but electromagnetic forces enable a rail gun to attain a far higher firing rate. This means a rail gun can fire projectiles some 50 times more quickly than a regular gun. It can strike ships more than 130 miles away, and it can rip through armoured hulls like tissue paper. Another benefit of the rail gun is that its projectiles are less expensive than conventional weapons, and since electricity powers their propulsion, they don't require any internal propellant. There's also a problem though! You would need 25 megawatts of electricity to fire a rail gun. Each second. Though rail guns are still in the research stage, modern warships are so advanced that they have already deployed them. China is also moving quickly to create its own rail gun using 3D-printed parts, while the US Military stated in July 2021 that it would no longer be developing rail guns in favour of hypersonic missiles.

This rail gun project was "scrapped" or discontinued. Which basically means it was completed and now top secret technology.

modern warships faster than most countries 🗿🗿

Then we put two reactors in the carriers

It's all fun in games until someone puts it in a plane that looks like the love triangle child of a SU-47, F-14 and F-22 and the skies start speaking latin.

The problem is sustainability...the gun literally starts ripping itself apart after each shot

The problem with them is that we can only fire a small amount of rounds before the electrodes begin to warp, until we find a stronger material for the electrode " barrel" it's not feasible.

It's crazy that there's no explicit propulsion but there's an explosion coming out the barrel anyway

Don't they also sort of destroy themselves with all that kinetic power?

Didn’t this canceled? The barrel life was abysmal

A watt is energy per second already. A mwh is a megawatt running for an hour. So mw* 3600 which is a jules rating

Excellent job, BAE. This will not go away. It is too unbeatable.

Frankly, I see the end of development on the rail gun as a temporary thing... as it is so far ahead of its time, we really are lacking in the technology to make th reliable and cost efficient, as opposed to hypersonic missiles, whose tech we have had for decades but never implemented due to lack of need

The problem is barrel wear, you have to replace the barrel every 30 or something shots. Also the fact that very high penetration rounds usually make very little damage to internal components, meaning you have to hit precisely the ammunition (which is usually below the waterline) and it still most likely won't detinatate

yeah let's forgo inexpensive shells for multimillion dollar missles to support our corporate masters

There’s a massive BAE Systems logo on there. They’re British not American.

Bigfest peoblem is it's a line of sight weapon. Sure, you can probably compensate for loas of velocity at longer ranges by aiming higher and having the projectile perform an arc, but, at some point, the projectile will lose its velocity and energy and either hit less than desireable effect or fall short altogether. Meanwhile a hypersonic missile only needs a target ro lock on to and if it's a atationary object it's basically a giaranteed kill, and, if it's a moving object it better be able to move fast enough and be able to change direction/altitude in such a way as tp bleed the energy enough for the missile to fall short or be stelthy enough as tp evade continuous radar lock.

Megawatts are already energy per second

When China builds more aircraft carriers we should put one of these on a ship, the barrel might destroy itself but it will be worth it for a projectile to cut clean through an aircraft carrier!

It is so advanced we never saw it in service 😂
