GOPRO HERO 10 vs DJI POCKET 2 Low Light BATTLE!

Needless to say the DJI Pocket 2 demolishes GoPro Hero 10 in low light. A faster aperture and a bigger sensor really shows how bad GoPro handle low light. This is real world comparisons and in the studio.
DJI are doing exceptional things with image quality and the Pocket 2 dominates this test. This is comparing apples to oranges though as they are both designed quite differently and for different usages yet they can be used for the same thing.
It is only fair to compare these as the same target audience may be choosing between these two cameras.

For my use case, I have both cameras. When I'm doing walking tours of neighborhoods or real estate properties, the Pocket 2 is my weapon of choice. When I'm doing driving tours of communities, the GoPro Hero 9 (I may get the 10) is my weapon of choice.

It makes more sense to buy two cheap throw-away cameras under $500 each than to try to solve both problems with an expensive solution.

Each camera is designed for different users.

Thank you for taking the time to make this comparison. You saved me from purchasing the wrong camera.

I don't see the GoPro and Pocket in the same category. Two different use cases. The sensor size alone will tell you GoPro will be bad in low like compared to the Pocket. A better comparison would be the Pocket 2 vs the iPhone 13 Pro on a DJI OM5 or other gimbal. Either way thank you for creating and sharing with us. I appreciate the time and effort put in.

I'm glad I watch this on the bigger monitor as I couldnt see a huge difference on my phone. But seeing this on the bigger screen my draw dropped at how bad the GoPro is compared to the Pocket 2. Thanks so much for doing this review.

I didn't think the Pocket 2 would be so good compared to the Hero 10. Thank you for this super interesting comparison

I saw some rumours that DJI pocket 3 will be released in this October or November! Should I wait for that or go ahead for Dji pocket 2?

Excellent comparison, thank you! The Hero 10 is a more complete, robust, versatile, and real action camera. Pocket 2 is a more specific, unique, type of gadget, it would have lost if this comparison was about waterproof, integrated connectivity, screens, removable lenses and batteries, variety of accessories, etc. But Pocket 2 is an absolute winner in sensor size, stabilization (nothing beats a mechanical gimbal), and therefore, video smoothness and quality, especially in low light. At the end of the day, it will depend on the preferences and type of use and user.

I didn't expect to think the older Pocket2 was going to be such a stand out winner for me but the sense I kept getting was that the Pocket2 was capturing exactly what I would expect see from the scene, the light and rendering what really looks like the exact time of day the footage was shot. The GP footage looks to me like it was shot an hour earlier if I didn't know better.

I really don't gel with the feeling that my camera was distorting what I was trying to capture so much...

My takeaway would be that if you were out shooting at night time and you needed to recapture a scene that you're already an hour beyond, just whip out the GP and it will be like going back in time to get a second or supplemental take...

Other than that...

DJI rocks.

Great video.
Was the Pocket 2 on "high quality" mode btw?
As, I noticed, high quality mode is essentially an in-built denoiser.
Downside of it is that creates little bit of motion artefacting or something of the sort. Especially when there's more movement in the scene.

How do you think the gopro will work on a Zhiyun Crane m2 gimbal vs the dji pocket 2 in low light?

beautiful daughter! she will grow up so fast when you didn't notice, take lots of video and photo of her and most importantly spend more time with her! you will miss the moment once she grown up.

Do you remember if you set the ISO in these shots, or the ISO max? Either way the comparisons are great and are exactly what I was looking for.

Gopro so grainy only con with pocket 2 is the activation which is a big headache

Brisbane looks good in your footage (Sydney boy here). I don't see this as either/or choice. I have both cameras and the GoPro does things the Pocket can't do, and the likewise the Pocket does things the GoPro can't do, plus low light footage on the Pocket is way better. I also like the Pocket accessories.

Of course a gimbal stabilized camera which doesn't need to keep everything in focus all the time, so can have a shallower DoF (larger sensor and lower f-number) is much better in low light. It's simple physics. The comparison is about as meaningful as a HERO10 vs Pocket 2 underwater test (don't do that to a Pocket 2)! Or a comparison of the two mounted on a high speed vehicle, where the airspeed stops the gimbal from operating.

You're right that there's overlap in who may consider buying these cameras, but that's true of any camera class. I was wondering about buying a 1-Inch sensor point and shoot (RX100 VII, or G5 Mk II) recently, as a pocketable camera to take on family trips, but then found myself wondering if I should just go for a X-T4 APS-C mirrorless instead to avoid the compromises of a mere 1-Inch sensor. Clearly those are completely different cameras. It's like thinking about buying a motorbike, but then wondering about a pick up truck instead. It wouldn't make sense to then post a comparison review highlighting cargo carrying capabilities of the two vehicles. So not an apples to apple comparison, even if there's overlap in the potential customer Venn diagrams.

Great illustrations I was considering purchasing a GoPro and I already have the pocket 2 so thanks for helping me with deciding….

Niiiice. Thanks for the comparison. I was trying to decide if I should get hyped for the Action 2 because of the sensor size versus my inadequate GoPro9. I threw 30k lumens at that thing in a 10x10 studio and it still wasn’t enough to get the image quality that you can get outdoors, and at a certain point I just couldn’t get ANY depth lighting at all because the whole damn space was just loaded with light lol. This side-by-side comparison showed me that I think the new sensor size in the Action 2 might just be big enough to employ

awesome footage Jason . Lets see how DJI action 2 will handle low light. I Love my Pocket 2 in low light

Hey Jason,

Yeah we all know by now Gopro doesn’t make their products to perform well in lowlight. Also with Hypersmooth, it needs a lot of light for the stabilization to work so even with ND filters and 180 shutter rule, it craps out if you want to shoot with motion blur. Better to just add mist filters and keep shutter speed high.

I’ll be curious though to see the Pocket 2 (1/1.7” sensor size, 16MP, 20mm f1.8) vs One R 1” mod (1” sensor size, 24MP, 14.4mm f3.2). Both can’t go under water without a housing or vs ZV-1.

It just seems to depend on use cases:
1) need waterproof without housing, good stabilization, compact and portable, and shooting im daylight: Gopro or Osmo Action, Insta360 Go2
2) need good lowlight, good stabilization but don’t need waterproof, then Insta360 1”, Pocket 2, and ZV-1
3) most convenient, portable, good lowlight, good stabilization, waterproof or IP68 up to 6m then the new iPhone13 Pro and Pro Max would be the choice

This is leaving out pricing which is a big decision factor for many.

Which ones are you using for portability and convenience when you don’t carry your Sony or cinema cams?
