This is a Hover Fly. Many people mistake them for Sweat Bees. They are not bees and they do not sting. They are super friendly and social. You can usually get them to land on you if you hold your hand out by them. Too cute! Entomology

If you slowly extend your hand towards them while they're hovering they'll land on you.

I found one with a mangled wing (Think that it may have somehow escaped the clutches of one of the millions of spiders living on my patio.) fairly recently and tried to help make life a little easier for it since it could no longer fly. (Hoverflies are beneficial insects! Especially if you have a garden of sorts or just care about nature, you want them around. Aside from that, they are cute and kind of nice to just watch.) I'd have it climb onto me and then leave it on one of my flowering plants to feed and shelter. I lost track of it for a few days assuming that it might be "gone" and then randomly found it again. Happened twice. It was surprising how far it managed to get around despite being flightless. Not sure where it is now but it honestly really did feel like it understood that I was trying to help it. It was very willing - seeming almost eager at times - to climb onto my finger to be taken to some different plant or flower. Hope the little dude is okay somehow

I used to always wonder why these things would get so close to me and id always think it's a baby wasp or something and try to avoid them.

I once saw one of these at a park but it was HUGE (it wasn't a wasp)

They are annoying af, during marching band (I play electric bass) they always land on the strings of my bass and make it sound terrible, I shoo them away and like 4 more show up, they even fight over landing on the strings.

We have some that like the flowers on our balcony. They seem to greet us when we come outside. They hover in front of our faces and check us out. I love them
