I've never seen this type of fly before. Its coloration mimics a yellow jacket wasp. It also resembles a type of robber fly.

Apparently, they are not just a average fly, but a hero that saves fruit crops

I just found out about these guys recently. Never noticed them before, but this summer they've been plentiful. They're adorable, so friendly and inquisitive. I was putting up some chicken wire in my yard last week, and there was a hoverfly that literally hung out with me for hours! Just buzzing around like a teeny helicopter.

Hoverfly are apparently great for your garden. Not only are they good pollinators, the larvae of some species also feed on aphids and other pests.

I always like watching them fly around.

I like them. They are always friendly and never sting me, but they can land on me and still do no harm. We have a lot variations of them here in Russia

I have one that's literally followed me around everyday for a solid week in Kasatchie national forest here in Grant parish Louisiana. I assume these insects are more intelligent than we know. Because this particular insect is highly sociable. Reminds me of a jumping spiders behavior.

Every now and then in the uk there is just a random month where hoverflys are everywhere 😂 scares people thinking they are wasps

You've gotta love how the hoverfly just casually left when he said “we’ll let him go back to doing fly stuff.”

I saved one last week. Was out in the garden having a cig and it’s freezing and on the washing line was a little chap was that cold he couldn’t fly. He hopped on my finger and I took him inside put him near the radiator and within 20 seconds he started walking fast 20 more and opened the door and he was gone strong. I like them coz there baby’s eat bugs on my tomatoes and strawberry’s.

Kind of resembles the corn flies we have around here

This is a hoverfly. They impersonate wasps/bees to scare away predators and can also hover, as suggested by their name. They are pollinators(i think)
