This Hoverfly is excellent example of Batesian #mimicry with its banded black and yellow warning colors and its narrow waist, this #hoverfly is mimicking a #wasp - an insect that sting and taste unpleasant to potential predators.
Hoverflies (also known as flower flies) are true flies (diptera) which only have one pair of wings while bees and wasps have two pairs of wings.
It is also able to mimic the sting of a wasp by pushing the tip of its abdomen into your fingers if held. However, they are harmless and do not sting.
This hoverfly is probing a flower with its proboscis looking for nectar.
