This video reconsiders the career of Nero as a failed effort to redefine the nature of Roman imperial power while building a powerbase that included leading figures from the Greek East. It then looks at the civil war that followed his suicide and the Flavian dynasty that emerged from that war. The Flavians both broke with Nero and embraced the legacies of Augustus, Tiberius and Claudius in a fashion that re-emphasized the Augustan idea of an imperial Republic.
