For Schizophrenics in India, a Ray of Hope (Extra Scene from 'India’s Mental Health Crisis')

India is currently suffering a mental health crisis. With only 43 government-run mental hospitals serving a population of 1.2 billion, resources are spread thin. What's more, mental illness is highly stigmatized in India, especially among women, who are typically committed to mental health facilities with no legal rights, receiving involuntary treatment, and sometimes without a proper diagnosis.

In this extra scene, VICE News visits the Schizophrenia Awareness Association in Pune, a community-based program which offers treatment to dozens of patients.

People don't want to their children to be treated (not generalising) once they hear the word "psychiatrist" or "psychologist", because they are conscious about what people will think about them, people here think a lot about pride and respect.

I have a schizophrenic younger brother and trust me people, people educate yourself about schizophrenia, so that you can learn about the pain and struggles of them and support them, don’t be selfish and please take care of your family if they are struggling with any mental issues and be grateful that it could have been you instead of them, so please help them and love them.

Great video, but I wish the interviewer addressed the question as how does it feel to live with mental illness, as opposed to labeling them as how does it feel that you ARE mentally ill. That just further stigmatizes the individuals. Also, for cultural sensitivities purposes, remove the shoes upon entering personal spaces. I found that a bit contradicting. Otherwise, I am glad these people are getting the humane treatment they deserve.

They are so helpless (Schizophrenic). It’s a very difficult issue as I think. Support them all time.

One of my friend is very religious in his beliefs and takes great pleasure and interest in telling me various stories and miracles about human religious figures.that okay with me but the real problem is that he claims that he receives written letters from a dead religious leader which miraculously appear near the picture of that spiritual man.he has also narrated to me about the incident of holy ash appearing magically and several other incidents. He has faked several incidents in order for me to believe with elaborate amount of lies and fake proofs. He isnot harmful.i am sure is a very interesting case for phychatrists

Most parents are afraid of the society to admit their child is mentally ill. At early days the child could have been easily helped with talkitover therapy, but due to the parents dilemma, over the years it becomes a bigger problem.
The whole family stuffers sometimes.

I hope organizations like this are available in other Indian cities too. Efforts should be made to start organizations on this model. This model may be used for drug addicts too.

I know a girl who fell in love with a guy and told everyone around that she loves him. She also told her husband and her neighbour and told neighbour and her husband and her friends to help her . But no one could, cause she was badly stuck in her imaginations and is probably because she was very fond of romantic movies since her childhood. There came a time when she even felt she is pregnant and everyone around her support her cause her mental health already gone way to far. The truth was the boy was just fragment of her intense imagination. May God bless her. And the worst thing is she is still waiting for her and tell everyone with happiness that one day he will come and make kids with her. We are trying our best to help her telling he will never come. She is ready to leave her husband too for her imaginary lover. Worse than cancer

Awesome. healing in community. Some "experts" would say that scinzophrenia is genetic and not treatable but i say its not well understood by these "experts" and that it is treatedble.
