Being a retired hospice nurse, I have seen this and many other experiences when someone is actively dying and after they have passed.

One night I caught a stab victim under his arms when he collapsed and let him down on the floor and then held the flashlight after the paramedics arrived while he was on the stretcher where I saw him die. His eyes were losing their lustre while he was fading.

I was the last thing my Dad opened his eyes to. He was laying on his side in his hospice bed, about to lose to a cancer so rare it had no name. His breathing was shallow, I was sitting next to him and holding his hand. My Mum, brother, sister, brother-in-law and his parents and my niece were all on the other side of the room giving me a bit of space and talking about what, I have no idea. His eyes opened, fixed straight ahead. By chance, aimed at me. I was frozen for about five seconds while we stared at each other. As I called to Mum that his eyes were open, I'll never forget the way that they rolled as he closed his eyelids for the last time. He was on his right side and they rolled to his left to look toward the sky, almost like a bubble rising to the top.

To this day it messed with my mind as to whether he could see anything in those five seconds, whether he understood what he was seeing, or whether as his eyes rolled he was proud or disappointed that his youngest, gay son was his last vision of the world. It was a special moment, but the lack of anything on his face gnaws at me.

As a paramedic seeing later stages of decomposition, it's crazy when you get to days 5+ and their eyes lose pressure and get sucked back into the orbital socket. It's the weirdest looking thing.

My mom died 3 days ago in front of me and that’s the first thing I saw was the eyes changed as soon as she started to die. I wish I didn’t have to witness that. Having the final vision of my mom and my best friend fade out was pretty devastating. I don’t think I’ll ever get over it

I watched my great uncles eyes lose their color and irises lost the tension when he died. I may have been the last thing or person he saw. I was helping the medic team with his bag valve mask breathing. The medevac got to us but he did before they can leave to get to a hospital.

I knew that my mom was going to die about 4 days before she actually passed away I had spent the night in a Thursday night and bless her heart my mother was up and about with visitors fromeearly afternoon and evening and even getting up and covering me up with a blanket I left the next morning so happy thinking my mom was feeling better never seeing anyone on the verge of dying being so active and lighthearted seeming happy so I left and didn't go to her home on Saturday she was on hospice and had cancer so on Sunday I went and when I went into the room I looked into her eyes and instantly knew she was close to death and I knealt down beside her and put her hand in mine and on my face crying and she said It will be ok Tania it will be ok she knew that I knew and that was one of the last things that she said dying a few days later

during labor with one of my kids i pushed too hard and caused petechial hemorrhage of the whites of both my eyes. i didn't let anyone see me or my baby for about 6 weeks until it healed and the whites were white again. they looked scary!
