Teach 10 Percent Questions

Learning percentages follows study of common fractions and decimals, and knowing that "percent" means "per hundred". 10% is therefore 10/100, or 1/10. Multiplying by one tenth is the same as dividing by 10, which is done most easily by moving the digits one place to the right (never talk of moving the decimal point).

Calculating discounted prices means working out the discount amount first, then subtracting it from the original price. If students can cope, get them to hold the discount amount in their head, then subtract before writing down just the answer. But if students struggle with that, it is quite OK to write down the intermediate step first.
