How to knit the knit stitch for beginners

A step by step tutorial on how to knit the knit stitch

In this video, I'll show you how to knit the knit stitch in the continental way. For me, this is the most efficient way to knit as it doesn't put a lot of stress on your joints. You can also knit incredibly fast with it.
Beginners should start with single pointed needles size 6-8 (or 4-5mm) and nice chunky sheep wool. Don't pick too big or too small needles, this will make things more complicated for you.
I tried to really record things as slowly as possible and zoom in a couple of times. At the very end of the video, I also inserted a little part where I show you how to knit the knit stitch the US American /English way (also called "throwing").
I'd be interested to learn which version you prefer. So, comment if you have any questions and I'd be very happy to answer them.

Also, make sure to subscribe my channel for regular knitting tutorials from me.

Thanks so much for this! I was taught to wrap the yarn around my index finger and never really figured out how I was supposed to control it well, so I've been holding the working yarn almost like a cigarette. I wrapped it like you do and I ended up almost back to my normal knitting speed by the end of the video. Can't wait until I'm as fast as you :3

Finally! Not only learnt how to tension yarn but that it's OK to guide it with right index finger! Phew I wasn't doing it wrong after all. But my tension is perfect now.

I struggle a bit with knitting, I crochet a lot so I find knitting intimidating and with way too much variations and techniques that I do t know where to start! But I do know how to cast on and do knit and purl stitches, the way I learned to do it though haven't seen it in someone else, my aunt taught me for knit stitch to place my right needle behind the left one when picking the yarn and for the purl stitch to place it at the front, it works well for me but that's the only thing I know what to do 😅

hi! I am fairly new to knitting but have been making progress, mostly due to your tutorials and tips, thank you! I learned Portuguese style knitting, which worked well except for having to translate some knitting techniques since everything happens in front for Portuguese and having to deal with the neck and/or pin issues. I got tired of wrapping the yarn around my neck or fiddling with a pin on my shirt. So I am jumping in to learn continental and again your tutorials are great! One issue that I cannot seem to solve is that the yarn frequently drops off my index finger, sometimes when there is too much tension and sometimes when there is not enough. Argh! Anyway, I remembered you using a yarn guide in your double knitting tutorial and I find that is solved the yarn dropping issue. Thank you for that tip!

I've been knitting (amateurly) in English style for 15+ years and have been meaning to learn continental for at least five — but this is the first time I've watched a video and understood the way the same stitch is being formed by the different technique, and I've managed two rows so far! Sure, I'm about ten times slower than usual (which is already pretty slow) but I can already feel how much faster it will be once I get the hang of it. Hopefully that doesn't take too long, because in the mean time I feel very clumsy and tense! Thank you so much for your very clear video — I appreciate the detailed but simply-stated instructions and the exaggerated/slowed down movement.

Thank you so much for the explanations. I want to learn how to knit but I’m left-handed and I’m a bit worried about starting. My mother tried to teach me how to crochet but she is right-handed so her way didn’t work for me.
