KOREAN AIR DENIED ME BOARDING - Don't make this mistake!

The last episode of my Korean Vlog ends in the most dramatic fashion, almost causing me to get stranded in Busan.

Let's just say that my brain was still in COVID mode. You see, I've spent so much time during COVID travelling within Australia on literally hundreds of domestic flights - I have really forgotten how the rest of the world works when it comes to domestic flying within that particular country.

So what did I do to make KOREAN AIR swing a metaphorical broom at me to shoo me away like a black cat that brings bad luck? And how the hell did I get back to Seoul?

Enjoy this video of pure adrenaline and I ran across Busan trying to get back to Seoul.

I knew it! Same thing happened a couple weeks back, tried using my photo card/drivers license but got a no no from check-in staff. Luckily I happened to have my passport on me and Air Busan staff were more than happy to send my bags off.

One extra thing though, they’re very picky with middle names in this country so make sure you enter all middle names when booking!!

crikey what a day! I felt your anxiety as you raced to get the train and as you got closer and closer to it! Good price for the train. You're right to get from Melbourne to Sydney last minute but not flying would leave you in BIG trouble. and as the flight route between the cities is one of the most busy flight routes in the world (is it number one? I find it hard to believe but I heard it somewhere) you would THINK there is an obvious solution. its called high speed rail. but you know three dirty words here in Australia. Glad you made it sir! Great video! When things go wrong i hate to say it but it makes it even more entertaining!

You handled this situation well I have to say. For such a distance I would not even think about flying between Seoul and Busan in the first place. At least you've pointed the bright side - an earlier dinner appointment, it just cost you A$66 more to save you a few minutes.

It could happen to anyone. Flights have the highest stakes and they need to ensure those boarding are whom they say they are. Do not assume one country's practice is the same in another country.

I am hyperventilating just watching this vlog 😂

And I couldn’t stop wondering why did you leave your passport in Seoul instead of carrying it with you? 😂

That's one thing I found surprising in the USA for my first international domestic trip, when they asked for ID I was very shocked and showed my license then they said I needed to show my passport. Had no idea they checked ID at overseas places for domestic travel, just seems so dumb when Australia never checks your ID, thankyou for the info in this video as I had no idea it was a widespread thing!

Faaarrrrk!!! I had a situation like that when i was in New Zealand. Actually I wasn’t denied boarding, I just missed my flight back home to Brisbane because I assumed my flight departed 9 am but it was 6 am. Lol. I had to be back in Australia that day so I had to pay $550 for another flight the same day. Lesson learned

Forget about flying....just as a regular tourist I'd feel "naked" walking around a foreign country without a passport! You handled it really well! Good for you for keeping a level head! I'm surprised nobody at the Korean Air desk spoke English! What was you experience like around Korea getting around without speaking Korean?

I did exactly the same thing in Canada. Took a day trip from Vancouver to Vancouver Island via coach and ferry but forgot about the return journey by float I was travelling with my 84 year old mother and thankfully they took pity on us and allowed us to fly with driving licence and credit card I’d. it’ll never happen again.

That was nerve-wracking! Not to rub salt, but my wife and I did Busan Jeju on the Airbus Two-Twenty...feels a bit bumpy than the normal 320/737. Then Asiana old school 767 back to Gimpo. We actually stayed not far from the CU seen when you came out of the Taxi at Busan Station...gosh...glad that you made it back to Seoul!

Unfortunate you had to experience that. South Korean ID cards have so much biometric data that they might as well be a passport (all 10 of your fingers + undersides of fingers are printed upon issuance. We don't do that in NSW as far as I know).
The foreign equivalent in South Korea is known as the ARC (Alien Registration Card - yes, really) which you can get if you have an employment/study visa etc.
It's very annoying but you can't set up for domestic telecoms + bank accounts without this card, not to mention the amount of security bs you have to go through to transfer money (although all transfers are instant unlike the 2 business day wait without payid/okso)

I visited Japan and travelled domestically too. No passport needed too

"I mean, who visits a foreign country and leaves their passport in a hotel to travel across the country?" Apparently, people who visit Singapore, have their hotel near Changi Airport (which are really nice but expensive) but have to get to the Boon Lay. 🤣

It is always worth carrying your passport when travelling in a foreign country, should you ever fall foul of the police, etc. Presumably, in a country with more limited public transport, one wouldn't gamble on catching the last train/plane out!

If it’s a small country one could be forgiven for leaving their passport in their home. It’s extremely valuable you don’t want to risk losing it unnecessarily. I would bring it as a backup if travelling on domestic flights and other National IDs don’t work. But leave it if no air travel is involved and no other establishment needs to see it.

Access denied! Wow interesting. It is common they do not accept an Australia drivers licence as ID.
