I personally think the best format for live action Halo would be a Band of Brothers/The Pacific style miniseries. With each entry following a different theater of the war and different characters.

Honestly I would have preferred a show in the same vain as Generation Kill where you follow a Marine or ODST recon team through a battle and have Chief come in for an episode or two just to show how desperate the war against the Covenant really is and how awe inspiring the Spartans are.

The real problem is that the showrunners wrote a story that they wanted to tell, and then they looked for an established and popular franchise that they could use it in, not the other way around. It's like starting a car company using 3rd party components, getting the rights to use body kits that are based on a more popular/expensive brand (I'll just say Porshe as an example) and then getting offended when Porshe fans don't think your vehicle lives up to the original and don't want to pay the same kind of prices. They don't care that you bought the rights to make a car that mostly looks like a Porshe, as it doesn't run like one, so they aren't going to treat it like one.

The show gives me a very "Syfy Original Series" feel, especially in the effects department. I know graphics aren't everything when it comes to video games, but you don't have the luxury of relying on gameplay when you're using *an entirely visual medium.*

I always felt like a Halo TV show would be better if it was animated, like the Clone Wars or something similar. It just seems like a better medium.

I understand that the show is set in its own timeline, and while I'm experiencing a mix of emotions both good and bad, I can't shake the feeling that I'm watching an absolute stranger stumble around in my best friend's skin.

My hot take: making the MC the main character was a mistake. With the games, really each player was the MC, it's a power fantasy. They should have focused on Noble team and have the MC appear sparingly but to great effect.

The first episode looks nice. Even if you accept that it's not Canon, you can't defend the end of the episode. He takes off his helmet to tell the girl he wants to help. He says when they land, they will come on board and kill her. Instead of putting his helmet back on to get ready for the fight, he goes and watches a movie about his life. It's bad either way. He sounds like the Mandalorian and acts like Robocop mixed with Ryan Gosling in Blade Runner 2049.

When you realize Red Vs Blue is more faithful to the Halo franchise than this show . . .

This is one of the big issues with a non canon adaptation; the writers make certain assumption about the knowledge viewers will go in with, and that will always leave some people feeling like they’re missing something. Even if we know as fans how desperate the fight against the covenant is, it still needs to be shown and given appropriate weight. This isn’t the death of the Waynes or Uncle Ben that we’ve seen a half dozen times each already to the point where we can skip it. This is the first Halo show, nothing should be skipped

Do you remember some of the live action trailers they did years ago? Those evoked much more emotion than this first episode did. I felt almost nothing for any of the characters. It felt rushed. Hoping things change in future episodes.

The two biggest issues i had were when the MC picked up the chain gun and mowed down a few Elites, but the rebels couldnt take one down at the gate with two or more chain guns.

That, and the Cortana clone. Ew. Otherwise, i liked it

I feel like if they wanted to stay away from main continuity, they should have made a completely new story. There's much much more to the Halo universe than Master Chief. Imagine a show in the vein of band of brothers or something, maybe centered around the short story "Dirt" with ODSTs. Then you wouldn't need so much clunky CGI.

It definitely doesn't feel very halo-y but more like a generic sci-fi military with a halo coat of paint. Humanities struggle and the fight for survival against overwhelming odds is what constructed a good baseline "tone" for halo games. One where even though you were a super soldier it felt gritty and very intense with each mission that goes by. The show kinda feels more casual all things considered.

4/10 Slight spoilers: Master Chief going "awol" in such a way? No way. Not at this point in the timeline. A human covenant? No way either
The Spartan/Human interaction was done okay. The start was good. Halsey was done right. But the rest? Please, God no!
Oh and with the set pieces, sfx and costumes they did a good job overall but then on the other hand they did a really bad job with the music and sadly... the story overall

The fact master chief just casually has his helmet off just shows how much they don't know or care to know about the halo lore

I was so confused by how when Chief picked up the gatlin gun he tore through the elites, but the insurgents had two of them before.

This show will be, with no doubt, a show of all time. That's it, something that exists.

I’m right there with you. Things I loved, and things I didn’t. Clearly there is a love for the source material as all the ships, weapons, aliens, Spartan armor, etc are almost perfect replicas (even down to the Lone Wolf symbol on Spartan chest armor).

But the treatment of Halsey and her programs? The dumbing down of the political machinations? The at times very clunky CG (the rifle toss lost me…like, why not use the actual prop rifle?)

I think if they were going to go pre reach they shouldn’t have shot their wad by introducing the covenant so soon. Would have loved to have seen some early “Fall of Reach” content of the Spartans on early missions against insurrectionists to establish their moral gray area before coming across the Covenant maybe by the 3rd episode. Save the first helmet removal for Sam when he dies to begin establishing their humanity more.

Never played it, nor read the books. I enjoyed most of the first 2 episodes but I appreciate the content you put together. It's good to have some comparisons.
