In women's artistic gymnastics, beam is the third event in the Olympic order.
This apparatus is 4 inches wide, 16 ft long and 4.10 ft high.
Since the 80s, beams have been covered in leather or suede in order to make them less slippery and are now also sprung to accommodate the stress of high-difficulty skills.
The gymnast has 1m30s to perform a mixture of acrobatic skills, dance elements and choreography.
In this video, we'll take a look at the 5 most difficult skills performed on the balance beam.

I find it funny how doing a move onto the beam is not as dangerous but “The biles” is dangerous. it’s only dangerous because no one can perform the move. Simone Biles literally changed the name of gymnastics and is a inspiration to all young athletes, taking away something she accomplished and worked hard for us disappointing and sad

I love the layout full on beam (not the dismount). It's just such a nice skill to watch when done properly.

As a protest and underrated skill, Biles will no longer be seen internationally even its creator. If a gymnast cannot perform such, dont attempt. But if someone who can, that's a gift and give a bonus point.

After Simone retires, another gymnast will successfully perform "The Biles" and the FIG will decide increase the difficulty rating. Right now, they are punishing Simone. She won't perform it because she can do other G rated skills that are less difficult.

the biles should definitely be an I element. maybe even a J element. the fact that they don't want to encourage it it's just non sense. first of all the gymnast needs to have enough power to do it, and not just power, a lot of technique and rotation and any coach or gymnast with sense of reality would know if the gymnast has or not all of this abilities.

I *_LOVE_* the Patterson dismount. I remember watching Carly at 10 years old put it into the history books at the 2004 Olympic Trials & then at the 2004 Athens Olympics. As a child I was in complete awe of her. She is still very much a favorite of mine & I miss seeing her in Olympic Gymnastics but understand why she doesn’t compete on the elite level anymore.. She almost always stuck the landing as well. _Almost always._ You could tell she trained hard for that dismount.

It’s up to the coaches to keep their people safe. This is just pettiness, in my opinion.
They need to award Simone the ratings she deserves. Did they downgrade Mark Spitz or Michael Phelps? And this is going to sound funny but the same with Secretariat. There have been athletes that have gone so far beyond others and they are honored for their greatness but they come up with the stupidest reasons for holding back her numbers. I pray it’s not because of her color. I hope they know history will judge their choices.

The Biles should be a I or J! Maybe a K, but definitely a J at least

Back in the day, after I was no longer able to compete, I was asked to help choreograph routines. That was when the Garrison & Erceg & other mounts of this type were common. We tried these with a couple of our girls that were advanced enough to do them. From this list, I'd say either of these 2 are my faves.

As Katelyn Ohashi has tweeted recently: Simone Biles, how many times can you make history??? Gosh, you're

A full-in on the floor is rated E as balance beam dismout it is rated G. A double double on floor is rated H so it should be rated as dismount J according to this logic (it's a cheek that it is only rated H )

I like the Garrison mount and the Biles dismount, not because both are introduced by American gymnasts, but because of their difficulty to carry out. The layout is also very important.

I wish there were more G+ skills actually on the beam rather than most of them being dismounts, but there’s only so much you can do on the beam. Not that the dismounts are not difficult, but it’s just that you don’t have to worry about staying centered on the beam when dismounting because they land on the mat. I’m really excited to see if Chellsie Memmel performs the piked Arabian in competition and if it gets a G rating or not!

I’m pretty sure I was the first gymnast to do the triple turn on beam. I was 17 in high school. 36 years ago. I didn’t know you were able to name a new skill. I would have named it the Naomi, after my grandmother 💗
