In a rare celestial event, Earth is set to temporarily gain a new mini-moon! Asteroid 2024 PT5, discovered in August 2024, will orbit our planet for roughly 57 days, making it an intriguing object of study. Measuring only a few meters in diameter, this space rock is believed to be a fragment possibly ejected from the Moon during an ancient impact, adding to the fascination surrounding its arrival.

This mini-moon will start its orbit on September 29, 2024, and stay close to Earth until November 25, 2024. During this period, scientists will monitor its path, providing valuable data on the asteroid’s composition and behavior. Although it poses no threat to Earth, the asteroid’s temporary capture by our planet’s gravity offers an opportunity to observe the dynamics of Near-Earth Objects up close.

Asteroid 2024 PT5’s orbit highlights how gravitational forces, especially from larger planets like Jupiter, can alter an asteroid’s path and draw it near Earth.

While these encounters are rare, they help astronomers understand how small objects move within our solar system and their potential for future exploration.

That's no moon, that's a space station.

So let me get this straight, Earth is getting a new moon before we get GTA

Asteroids, I would have thought humans would have learned to hitch a free ride through space on rocks. 😊

2024PT5 would be a great candidate for an asteroid capture mission.

If one was ready.

bro, i missed september 18th lunar eclipse.
Also, i guess there is an asteroid around the size of a bed orbiting the earth.

If I can’t see it with my own eyes, and is not going going to hit us, I’m not interested.

There are 2 problems with detected but unstudied asteroids. As they head toward our planet they might encounter other asteroids or space junk, and at their high rate of speed break off chunks of asteroid that then are on a separate trajectory and more likely to veer towards Earth due to less momentum to pass by . The second is in the leaving of earth in the sector where Earth’s gravity is acting to decelerate the object. Not knowing the integrety of the formation, decelerating forces could cause the asteroid to break apart dependingon the angl it sweeps through - the worst case being as it just passes Earth and acceleration switches to a pulling force.

If we can't see it with the naked eye then it's not a mini-moon!

“It’s, like, a little, teeny tiny, little moon.”

“In no way is it going to come close enough to threaten us in any way”

I’m losing brain cells here lol

Just a thought. There seems to be a lot more asteroid debri around these days. Could they be a prelude to a bigger event?
My reason. If some where a long time ago . Say maybe a million years ago. Ikn maybe from a super nova or countless other reasons. Then the debri from that would start small and just get bigger.
To the point of a very large amount of rocks coming all at once? Just a thought.
I remember watching something by the BBC a long time ago. Something like, when our solar system goes through the central plain of our galaxy ( A very busy area) it can disturb the ort cloud. It takes about a million years for the disturbed asteroids and meteors to reach the inner parts of our solar system.
I'm pretty sure they reckoned it had been about a million years since we last passed through it.
So that might explain something. Or not.

What material(s) is it comprised of? How would anyone have time to know this, to then anticipate trajectory and predict if it can or will break up entering, or leaving orbit?

This report is just a best guess, based on hope and prayers.. or planned disclosure to keep the masses in check.

question everything

Check the orbit the moon's gravitational pull and the Earth's gravitational pull it could hit Earth three body problem

Surely something 'only' 10m across would be burned up in the atmosphere

Now if NASA or anyone had any brains they could keep it in orbit and mine the shhhh out that mineral rich orbiting lump of

So, whether a true moon or not...I have a question...

So, I grew up learning that the actual moon is used to influence the tides in the ocean. So, scientifically, if this is true....could this be impacting our weather and be a huge influence upon our hurricane weather this year, even if not seen with the naked eye?

Good video, informative, visual. Good effects.

So something big is coming and these "rocks" are just the pre "aproach". Could that be a reality?
