"Earth is getting a new mini-moon! Asteroid 2024 PT5, a 10-meter rock, will be captured by Earth’s gravity for about 53 days starting in late September 2024. This rare event gives scientists a unique opportunity to study a near-Earth object up close and refine our asteroid detection systems. Learn why this mini-moon is important, what it means for our planet, and how it fits into the bigger picture of space exploration and planetary defense."

Last I read is that it won't completely orbit Earth, only do a slow arc, then depart in another direction. For it to be a 'moon', it needs to complete at least one orbit. Calculations indicate it won't.

Land something on it that will send messages back to Earth and watch it as it leaves

This is so amazing how things work... Great video

Fun fact: if the world knew 14 years in advance that an asteroid was going to hit Earth. Nobody could stop it.

What i'm interested is about asteroid apophis hitting us by 2029.

It's a wibbly wobbly wandering space wock, wondrously wending it's way Westward without a worry.

Why not find a way to mine it for minerals?

“Detection system… vital for planetary defence…” Wow! How has life on Earth survived billions of years without us??? 🤦🏻‍♂️

That's telling all of us something more than JUST! science.

Asteroid: yo can i stop by for a bit
Earth: sure, now i can study you

If our world's, combined military budget, were utilized to detect and protect our planet from a "dinosaur like" extinction... that'd be something leadership did, finally worthwhile.

Until it hits all the junk in space we have around the earth and shoot it at the space station lol

It would be a nice opportunity to practice capturing or redirecting such objects

First was a solar eclipse, then a solar storm, and Now a mini moon.

That would be an easy ( by comparison) one to outfit with info gathering sensors while in orbit.

I really hope we’d be able to finish the research required to learn how to mine asteroids by the time the next asteroid captures into earth’s orbit.

Be crazy to find out a whole civilization was living inside of there. 😊
