Travel grants are available for secondary school or further education colleges in England to take pupils aged 11-19 on international school visits anywhere in the world, through a new Department for Education programme in partnership with the British Council.

Shirebrook Academy went on a language exchange to France. Grants have also been awarded to a range of trips to 25 different countries, with themes including maths, science, history and geography. Your curriculum theme and destination is up to you and your partner school.

Thankfully the British Council have long subsidised exchanges, In my case at FE college level back in the late 1980's. We used existing friendship and twinning links between Coventry and Kiel in what was then West Germany, and built many long lasting friendships. One of ours moved over there permanently (with his Cov accent he speaks perfect German, they think he's from Dusseldorf !) and one of theirs is now over here and happily married.
