Religions and Marx advocate for same things, same goals and value system. The difference is: religions say “because God wants you to do so, and you should obey”; and Marx explains why you should be like that from completely logical objective materialistic reasons. I think God is what people can not understand and explain, and when science manages to understand and explain smth, then there is no place for God in it anymore. With growth of our knowledge religions will naturally fade away. With collapse/decline of our civilization religions will rise again as the only harbor of order and survival.

The Church, business, trade, and even early nation states themselves were not truly distinct enterprises in earlier times, before the rise of secular, constitutional governments. So it's a bit misleading to attribute any and all forms of good works throughout history that have been connected to religious institutions (not to mention nominally "religious people", which formerly constituted virtually everybody!) as being exclusively to the credit of "religion".

A more subtle argument, though, could yet be made, which many of us who are more secularly inclined might still agree with, and precisely one which great philosophers like John Ruskin HAVE made. Which is that it has been precisely the DIVORCE of all these institutions from each other in modern times, combined with a deliberate promotion of ideologies that literally glorify greed and self-interest, while divorcing all business and industry from ethics, that have led to our greatest peril.

Sheikh Hamza's point about Marx's aphorism concerning "the opiate of the masses" is a very accurate and useful observation, however.

Unfortunately yusuf missed the point. Marx was not a theologian and he did not found a religion that "killed millions of people". Socialism in the soviet union and under mao went on to increase life expectancy and literacy, which yusuf would know if he actually read any soviet or chinese history instead of building a critique of post Mcarthy cia propoganda that im sure the capitalists sitting around him in the world economic forum LOVED to hear. Marx was a social scientist and his work was not spiritual but rooted in material reality. He was wrong about many things but his dialectical materialism and critiques of capitalism led to national liberation movements worldover. Marxism was not a religion but is an evolving science that informed the struggles of the people of the world against their colonial or bourgeois oppressors. It created leaders like Guvera, Ho Chi Minh, Sankara, and is informing anti capitalist resistance to this day in palestine, vietnam, cuba, the phillipenes, india and many many more places. What i dislike about muslim leaders today is their refusal to look at anything but their own ancient history. The prophet pbuh told us to struggle in the way of kindness and to arm ourselves with knowledge even if that knowledge was as far as china. Where are the muslim clerics calling for a mobilization to al quds? Where are they calling out the gulf states for aiding the israeli war machine, for giving it use of air bases and food and every other thing it needs to clear gaza? Where are the muslim clerics calling COP28 a joke and rallying to adapt and mitigate for climte collapse, when over 4 billion people are going to die this century because we are on track to reach 3 degrees within our lifetimes? Our ulema our spineless and have stopped learning bcz they keep telling themselves they know everything. And it is us they lead like sheep into unscientific and therefore unislamic thinking. The golden age of islam came bcz of our determination to learn everything. Now, the whole wolrd is on fire and still the muslim clerics are silent about fossil fuels.
