In this video from a recent Beck Institute Workshop, Dr. Aaron Beck describes how catastrophizing is a key feature of many psychiatric disorders. Dr. Beck discusses an interesting study following the Boston Marathon bombing which found that children who had a tendency to catastrophize before this event were more likely to develop symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) than those who did not have this tendency. Dr. Beck also emphasizes the importance of examining the content of the client's individual experience when developing the case formulation.

listen for language that indicates awfulizing or catastrophizing: was it a sad event or a heart breaking event? was a person abused or was he or she permanently damaged? did an event interrupt a person's schedule or did it ruin his or her schedule?
