The answer is no. The reasons are:
1) That's 1, 088.36 Canadian Dollar
2) They showed no new games and no disc drive to use my current PS5 games.
3) They showed a bunch of things that I personally don't notice while gaming.
4) The few games that I do play on my PS5 can't justify what I paid for my PC video card
5) Console gaming is priced itself out for the value it brings to my life, as someone who mainly uses their PC for gaming.

Add to that $80 for online playing after the internet bill you already pay.

The price is outrageous and then no disk drive, fuck off Sony lol

I thought a digital only future was going to price me out of gaming but it looks like the hardware cost will price me out of gaming by the time the PS6 comes out instead.

heading into this, all I asked from Sony is:

1) make it not look like a windmill blade.
2) include a disc drive.

apparently that's too much to ask. Welcome to 2024. One gets to choose between "always online DRM digital, come hell or high water" Microsoft, or Sony. Oh joy. No I've zero interest in investing in this. And yes, the 9th gen is my last console generation. See: <reference> diminishing returns

I'll be passing on the PS5 Pro. I haven't jumped into any of the mid-gen upgrades to date.

I think what turns me off the most with this proposed upgrade is the lack of games this gen - it has me asking why i would even need to upgrade if there are barely any great, new, games that are pushing the base PS5 to its limits. So the incentive to upgrading to the Pro model just isn't realized.

I feel like sony has created more new hardware than actual exclusives this gen. The portal, psvr2, pro model.. Give us some great games and we'll come along for the ride on hardware. But give us the games first so we can see why we might want to upgrade.

Anyway, always appreciate your take on gaming! Cheers

800€ here in Europe

It's a big fat no for me. Especially with no game announcements

I thought I was, but $900 USD after taxes, with a disc drive and stand... Hell no!
I'm building a 1440p PC for $1k, which will be more powerful than the PS5 Pro, and I refuse to pay the same price for a weaker console.

These greedy corporations get away with it because of these fools that are willing to blow money on it.

I had the same plan as you to sell my current ps5 and paid the difference but woah is 400$ to 500$ out of pocket is just a huge no. Half of their things they are showing are things that 2 second into a game I won’t ever notice . After Astro bot they went back and fumble the ball just like with concord

2tb ssd worth around 150 it should have been 599 without and disc drive maybe bad move from Sony but it's not really overpriced just should have kept it standard ssd with drive at 599 but hardly anyone uses a disc drive am buying one for sure

Some people want PC level quality but don't want to pay entry-level PC pricing. While steep for a console, this is basically the cost of a bare bone PC build with no disc drive. Since the drive is external that will tack on an additional $100 at most when speaking in turns of a quality disc drive on PC even though disc drives on PC have been of no use for modern gaming for years. Games have evolved, and the need for powerful CPUs and GPUs, as well as higher amounts of RAM, are essential for higher frame rates and resolutions that console players want. Perhaps these console players along with console manufacturers should push for and focus on 1080p or 1440p gaming and forget about 4k if you want to keep hardware cost down to $500-$600 and be able to play newer titles on large high resolution televisions at perhaps 1440p. If you have a standard disc version PS5 perhaps you stay with that and wait for the next gen consoles. I will be. Frames per second and high resolution cost money in the way of hardware if you want a flashy and smooth gameplay experience. Maybe some people really aren't ready for that. They are showing new games all the time. I'm not real sure what people are expecting to see in regards to visuals from a console. These consoles are fairly priced, and I would argue well priced, for what they offer in terms of visual fidelity.

I'm guessing this won't be a popular opinion lol. I'm just pointing out the basic truth when it comes to hardware costs. I've played on both PC and console for years simultaneously, so this isn't coming from a PC master race guy. If I was new to PS5 I would buy the PS5 Pro and stay digital unless you like physical discs, which I do on console. If that's important as well then fork out the money for the external disc drive. Whoa... just saw the comments on this post, and yeah, this will be a very unpopular viewpoint.

I've been waiting all these years with my base ps4 to get the pro but that price reveal hurt, should i just get the slim disk version for 500?

My problem where I live we already don't have many PS5 physical games available in stores. And we have different currency so the hardver usually even more overpriced (around 800 dollar).
On the other hand its will be the strongest console, great exclusive titles already available and many more to come.
And this is just the fraction of a high-end PC.
So its up to you to decide... 😃
Have a good day man!

The fact that the upgrade is more like 810 dollars than $700 because of the disk drive and the vertical stand being sold separately means that people who got the disc version of the Playstation 5 have to pay even more than the $700 price point to even replace what they currently have with the disc version of the PlayStation 5 to begin with, let alone for it to be an upgrade. What in the HELL, Sony. At least they got their head out of their ass and made it 2 TB base model. Incredibly ridiculous.

I bought a gaming PC in 2018 for $1k and I can still run new games at 30fps on ultra settings. Not to mention the other benefits of PC gaming.

I don’t see myself ever going back to console gaming if it’s not Nintendo.

Feels like the future of PS console(s) is entirely dependent on if GTA6 lives up to the hype

i think its a joke because not only is it 700 dollars but when they sell the disc drive im predicting that its going to be 100 dollars plus tax not to mention people will have to pay for ps plus if they want to play online. also no backward compatibility with ps2 and ps3 games
