If you just really enjoy circuit style ab routines then go for it (though I definitely wouldn't recommend the "ab exercises" shown in this clip). But in terms of practical results they're generally a poor use of time and effort.⁣ You're essentially doing a mix between a brief cardio session that doesn't burn very many calories... and a muscle building workout that doesn't stimulate hypertrophy nearly as effectively as other alternatives.⁣ Having "six pack abs" is primarily just an issue of maintaining low enough body fat levels, and that is achieved through a calorie deficit (which is mainly driven through your diet).⁣ You can't "spot reduce" fat by performing abdominal exercises.⁣ From an aesthetics standpoint, the only purpose for direct ab workouts is to build the actual abdominal muscles to get them popping out a bit more noticeably.⁣ (Not everyone needs to do direct ab training, but you can depending on your goals and preferences.) You don't train your chest by pumping out 5 different light weight/high rep exercises back to back for 12 minutes, so why would you train your abs that way?⁣ It makes no sense.⁣ Just train your abs in the same basic way as you'd train any other muscle group. Select exercises where you can get within a few reps of failure (kneeling rope crunches are my personal favorite), take a proper rest period between sets, and progressively overload in some fashion over time.⁣ "Ab workouts" are great for social media clicks because they can be done from anywhere and everyone wants to "lose belly fat" and "get a six pack"… but if most people really understood how little these workouts are actually doing for them then they probably wouldn't bother.⁣

Some of the 12 minute ab workouts actually helped me a lot. I naturally have high metabolism so Im already lean and it took me about 3 months and doing the workouts nearly every morning and my abs grew a crazy amount. Just my two cents.

Abs are made in the gym (through weight training and progresive overload) and revealed in the kitchen (lowering your body fat from a calorie deficit

Yes but regardless if it’s “spot reducing” or not, it still strengthens the abdominal muscles…

Chris herias training and being in a caloric deficit helped me get lean it's good cardio tbh + I got a lot of stamina from it. I wouldn't say they are useless, just not as effective as they are marketed as. Also it beats not doing anything for your body.

I respectfully disagree. Calestenic ab exercises are extremely effective when utilized correctly. Not only do they work but you'll probably be healthier than the 300lb hunk of meat that is out of breathe after going up a flight of stairs. At least he can bench 225 tho...

I love seeing Sean’s content for no BS fitness tips, and looking at everything at a hypertrophic standpoint.

However, the only thing I have a problem with is the fact that, workouts like this aren’t BS. It’s not the best use of your time training if you want to train for nice blocky abs, but workouts like this are a good way to challenge your body with something it hasn’t adapted to. It can also be fun to switch up your routine with workouts like these as a type of HIIT if you don’t prefer doing long bouts of cardio on a treadmill. Anything that’s elevating your heart rate is going to be useful exercise, just to what degree is going to depend on your fitness goals.

I agree with the fact that the most important factor for having visible abs is having a low enough body fat percentage however saying that short ab workouts don't work is just not true as myself and so many other people who use them see the benefits. I do athlean x ab workouts just twice a week and have a visible good six pack. You can't say they don't work when there is so much evidence to back it up. They're short, build abs and create a strong core. I don't see why you complain about them and say they don't work when they clearly do. Ovbiuosly you're right about ab exercises not spit reducing fat and that you have to have a low body fat percentage to even see the abs in the first place. I agree with pretty much all you're videos and I think you're a great fitness influencer but you are wrong with this I'm sorry.
