Black Powder Grenade VS Modern Hand Grenade

Black powder hand grenades are no joke. They can and will generate a lot of fragmentation. But black powder is low explosive and very weak compared to modern high explosives. We recently did extensive testing of black powder grenades and we got meager results at best. Still, they did work.

Now, let's compare how effective the primitive black powder grenade is against a modern M67 hand grenade. It contains twice as much explosive, is filled with the explosive composition B, and has a steel body instead of cast iron. Their performance is very well known and the M67 is widely used across many nations. Let's see how these two stack up against each other in fragmentation generation.

I have developed a soft spot for the black powder grenades.

Who would have guessed that 400 years of technological development would yeild slightly superior results. Shocking.

I just love that we've gone through many different grenade designs over the years and now we've come back full circle to the same basic dimensions as they were using when matchlocks were still a thing.

If we haven’t produced a better grenade in hundreds of years, I’d be pissed off

I've always wondered why the military went from the "pineapple" grenade to the M67 "baseball" grenade. It would seem to the layman that the pineapple's pre-segmented body would provide superior fragmentation compared to the round and smooth baseball grenade. Was there a definitive reason for this switch that I've never learned? I know that grenades usually wound either primarily by fragmentation or by overpressure. The German potato mashers were a primarily overpressure design and the pineapple was a frag design. I'm sure you guys are most likely to know out of everyone why we switched to the baseball.

Those cast iron grenades were filled with nails or other things to add the the shrapnel. One step older are clay pot grenades also filled with additives for shrapnel.

You’d need to test multiple explosions from both to make a conclusive point on which one has more fragmentation

Glad he is wearing gloves, yknow, to protect his hands from the Grenades

thats because the M67 has grooves on the inside that help with consistent fragmentation

The fragmentation impacts are based on the luck of that sphere breaking apart. Both are equally deadly.

That one black powder wound was *critical* though, mug was deep!

Moral of the test, you don't want to be near either of the grenades.
