A driver will often need to be able to drive slowly, for example, when in a traffic queue or urban area. This might look easy to do, but it can be difficult to achieve for a new driver until they get a good understanding of clutch control. This video will look in detail at how to control a car’s clutch at low speed, and then use these skills to go for a drive in a tricky urban area.

Video chapters:
* 0:00 Introduction
* 0:45 Different cars
* 1:33 Manoeuvering with the clutch
* 3:22 Pulling away with extra power
* 4:46 Pulling away quickly
* 5:44 Stalling the engine

Brilliant. In my last lesson I had my first experience in slow moving traffic at rush hour and have realised I'm not confident in how to control at speeds around 10-15mph. This definitely helps answer some questions I had, especially the part about slipping the clutch when required! Just a thought but it would be great if the on screen display showed which gear is selected. Might be a bit manually intensive to implement though...

Wow thank you so much for this informative video! I thought I knew how the clutch worked but after watching, I have again become a padawan. I had scoured youtube and watched a ton of videos on shifting smoothly but I was still having a ton of issues in stop and go traffic until today after watching this video!

Update 4/28: Since watching this a few days ago, I have been driving much more efficiently in traffic and have increased my MPG by average of +4 in city, 3/highway. Thank you Advance Driving School!

Never just use the clutch to get the car moving! Sure it works on a diesel but not on a petrol Car. Believe me my instructor taught me that on a diesel car but I bought a petrol Car and stalled trying to do that!

I'm teaching someone to drive (I know not advised; but we're staying in empty car parks to learn clutch control atm given the absence of he-man controls). I love the fact that you explain about the ECU - I try myself to explain the mechanics of the car behind what's happening - when conveying why clutch bite is required; why stalling occurs, etc.

But I was really amazed that you advocate clutch slipping... I was under the misapprehension that this can be a minor fault if the examiner spots you doing it. I even explained to my student that "what I did just there is discouraged" when she was watching me driving and I slipped the clutch in 2nd to go around a corner.

My tutor tells me to do this a very different way. He tells me to find the bite, release the hand brake and add some accelerator as the car beings to creep forward. This prolongs the life of the clutch and reduces the need for unnecessary acceleration which is therefore more economical...

brilliant video. I am struggling to use the clutch biting point when slowing down on a hill. I've stalled it many times.

I failed my last test over clutch control, position & gears hopefully pass this time :)

i learned this way on diesel: before any tight curve/corner press down the clutch, hold it, reduce with foot brake(mostly taking curves without need of stopping in second gear) and gently letting the clutch up to biting point so i won't lose control over the car and hit a car parked on the side of the road etc..

I had a refresher lesson yesterday, only the second time I'd driven in 28 years since passing my test. I managed to mount the kerb twice and stall the car five times. Main issue : clutch control.

I struggle with small spaces, like parking lots and bumper to bumper traffic etc because I lift the clutch up to biting point, move off the foot break and the car goes forward a few feet then slows down. I then press the accelerater, but not sure what to do with the clutch at that point. I'm in first gear at that time. I prefer highways and freeways though 🤣🤣. Smooth sailing

I got stuck behind a sweeper and stalled as I went too low in 1st gear, should have clutch down and then used the bit to move, new this as instructor told me after but this was good !

I just passed my exam, on the 23rd xD I learned on a diesel car but bought the new Hyundai i20 petrol, still waiting for it, maybe next week... but the seller told me it's way harder to drive the clutch of a petrol... is that true? Won't a modern can do what you just showed?... He gave me the impression it wouldn't...
