Re: Balloon man, Suzuki’s reasoning for the entire thing was that he wanted to pay off his debt this way (possibly through sponsors or just becoming famous), it was always stated as his intention. His first flight had a malfunction, then a later test flight also had some trouble at first but he decided to turn the test flight into a real flight without informing anyone beforehand. He was seen soaring way higher than he was supposed to before disappearing. He once called for help iirc but when help actually arrived he called it off saying he is fine, then he was never seen again. So if he didn’t die (unlikely, if I remember correctly parts of his gondola were found somewhere, just not the body) then he might have disappeared because of his debts. Sad thing is that the wife and child he left ended up having to pay off these debts.

I can explain Suzuki's story. I think we become so focused on wild theories or foul play that we forget how merciless and unpredicable nature is, as well as how mind bogglingly large the ocean is.
But don't worry I'm not suggesting your jumping to wild theories

Suzuki, Yoshikazu (鈴木嘉和) was born in 1940 Tokyo to a family of piano repairmen. After graduating university, he worked for Yamaha in repairing pianos.

In the 80s, he started multiple businesses in music which all failed. He was 500, 000, 000 yen in debt (approximately 5 million USD) and when confronted by debt collectors, he suddenly announced that he would replay his debt by flying a balloon aircraft across the Pacific.

Suzuki’s ‘Fantasy’ first revealed itself at a 1989 fair in Yokohama. He needed sponsors but because the fair was a flop and did not generate much-needed interest, Suzuki became angry and climbed a 30 meter tower nearby wearing the costume of the fair’s mascot Burua-chan (ブルアちゃん).

A fairground staff found him and called 119 (fire department).

The fire department came with a ladder and tried to convince Suzuki to climb down. Suzuki refused and stayed on top of the tower, striking poses until he was pulled down and arrested by the police.

Afterwards, he got the permission to install a balloon ride at the fair that allowed visitors to fly 10 to 20 meters off the ground.

On April 20, 1992, Suzuki tied four balloons to a chair and took flight from Ota, Tokyo to Kujukuri Beach in Chiba Prefecture—approximately 60 kilometers away—despite the local police’s attempts to stop him. Because he lost two bags of sand weight 15 kilograms each, he shot up from 400 meters to 5, 600 meters.

He eventually crash landed on a house after cutting off one of the larger balloons with a lighter.

Despite the damage to the roof of the house and its TV antenna, Suzuki was unapologetic and told his interviewers that his next destination was Hawaii.

He was then dubbed the “Balloon Man” (風船おじさん) by the media.

On November 23, 1992, at Lake Biwa, Suzuki unveiled the ‘Fantasy’, an aircraft with six balloons 6 meters in diameter and twenty balloons 3 meters in diameter tied to a wooden gondola. The gondola was made of fir due to its buoyancy in water and was 2 meters in width, 1 meter in depth.

Suzuki invited news outlets to show off Fantasy in a test flight. Only Fuji TV was in attendance due to his many failed attempts at achieving balloon-powered flight.

The balloon aircraft climbed to 120 meters before coming down.

And suddenly at 4:20 in the afternoon, Suzuki climbed onto Fantasy and took off.

When asked where he was going, Suzuki said:

“I’m going to America (アメリカですよ)”.

According to Suzuki’s calculations, once he reached 10, 000 meters, he could ride the jet stream and land in the US within 40 hours. For the trip, he had prepared oxygen tank, a week’s worth of food, a GPS sensor, altimeter, speedometer, an emergency signal for the coast guard, parachute, a radar reflector, a cellphone, a map, a thick coat, blankets, a helmet, and sunglasses.

But because his original plan had been to use six large balloons and twenty-six smaller balloons, the Fantasy struggled to climb. Also, before the flight, some of the balloons had burst and Suzuki was seen attempting emergency repairs with tape.

Suzuki had to quickly throw out the oxygen tanks and the ballasts on the side of the gondola, all two hundred bottles of soju, in order to achieve height.

When Fuji TV called Suzuki, he told them, “the helium is leaking a little but I’m fine” (“ヘリウムが少し漏れているが、大丈夫だ”). He called his family at 10 PM and updated them by the hour with statements like: the balloons looked odd. He wasn’t flying high enough. He was at sea. He took a smoke.

Suzuki told his family Fuji TV was no longer taking his calls.

At 6 AM, Suzuki called his family on his cellphone and told them that the morning sun was beautiful and not to worry.

This was Suzuki’s last call. His phone no longer had coverage.

On the night of November 24, an SOS signal was sent out. The Japanese coast guard found Suzuki off the coast of Miyagi, east of Kinkasan. Suzuki waved at the coast guard and stopped the SOS signal.

According to the reports from the Japanese coast guard, only two out of four main balloons remained.

The coast guard continued to observe him for the next three hours but because he waved his hand, turned the SOS signal off and tossed items overboard to lighten the load, they believed that he was not in distress and discontinued the rescue operations.

Suzuki was last seen headed northeast at 70 kilometers per hour at 2, 500 meters in altitude.

There was no further contact afterwards.

On December 12th, the Japanese Coast Guard asked the US, Canada and Japan to keep a lookout for Suzuki.

Ikeda, Manabu (池田學), an expert in meteorology, told Asahi Shinbun that survival was unlikely. Due to the material of the balloons used, they would have lost approximately 10% of helium a day. Suzuki would have inevitably landed in water afterwards.

Others agreed. The company responsible for creating Fantasy’s balloons stated in an interview that their balloons were not meant for flight and there was no guarantee that the balloons would maintain shape and function in high altitudes. An oceanographer with Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology theorized that if Suzuki landed in the waters off Miyagi, he would float towards Alaska. If he landed near Aleutian Islands, the Oyashio Current would deposit him on Japan’s shores.

Per Japanese civil law, a person is automatically declared dead after missing for 7 years. Though he went missing in 1992, Suzuki was declared deceased between 1999.

His body has never been found.

Nice to see you cover the Wych Elm story. I had no idea it was in this iceberg.

I actually submitted this to your community unsolved mysteries series but I realised that might have been discontinued, so I appreciate it being covered in this series :)

People: just because your favorite cartoon character has successfully cluster ballooned, doesn’t mean that it’s a good idea to replicate such an stunt in real life
