Great selection of books and awesome video. There is an interesting connection between Polonsky and Figes. According to a blurb on the Wikipedia rticle regarding Figes, In 2010, Figes posted several pseudonymous reviews on the UK site of the online bookseller Amazon where he criticised books by two other British historians of Russia, Robert Service and Rachel Polonsky, whilst praising his books, among others. Initially denying responsibility for the reviews, he threatened legal action against those who suggested he was their author. Figes' lawyer later issued a statement that Figes' wife had written the reviews but in a further statement Figes admitted "full responsibility" for the reviews, agreeing to pay legal costs and damages to Polonsky and Service, who sued him for libel.

So basically, a war between writers of Russian war....lol.

Fantastic video Micah - I love the concept of it as much as the books, Russia has such a facscinating history. It dominated my 2nd year of my History BA. The Figes book is amazing, you'll get a lot out of that. Geoffrey Hosking's History of the Soviet Union is a good book too. I would also recommend Paul Avrich's book "Kronstadt 1921" which is a brilliant account of the rebellion that happened at Kronstadt. Robert Service published a great book on Stalin that became a standard, just called "Stalin". For another big account of 100 years of Russian history there's "Endurance and Endeavour Russian History 1812-1992" by John N Westwood. Looking forward to the reviews of the books in the video.

I am super impressed of people who have the strength to read history related books. Being a non native english speaker sometimes made me bumped into words that i never encounter before… anyways… .love your sharing in this video… it would be really nice if its a one book kind of sharing / review (spoiler kind of stuff).. keep up the great sharing!

Last couple weeks, this has been my quest also: looking for books on Russian history. Super happy for this video! I have collected "Nicholas and Alexandra" then "The Romanovs, The Final Chapter". Both by Robert K. Massie. You have given me some great leads -- particularly concerning early Russian history. 📖Thanks much for sharing. Enjoyed video!

I read The Europeans, by Orlando Figes as well, and I found this author’s style very readable in a book deeply informative about a fascinating period of Europe’s history. A great author who is also a expert in Russia’s history.

Added several of these to my list. Great video thanks. I’m finishing up a People’s History and it’s a big book—but very good.

In fiction realm, I highly recommend “A Terrible Country” by Keith Gessen. Thought it did a really nice job depicting somewhat modern (circa 2009?) Russia.

Hi Micah, I have The Last Days of the Romanovs, which I bought used and will donate to. My library store. If you would like to have it’s dust cover let me know and I’ll send it to you. I will donate the book without the dust cover.
