This feels so timely because I just placed a hold on The Bronze Horseman which is an historical Russian history trilogy which starts in the 1930s. I’ve been following several lovely accounts on Instagram who are obsessed with Russian literature and Russia in general and because they are so passionate about the subject, I’m doing a buddy read of War and Peace in the winter which I am very excited about. They also recommend some great modern fiction on Russia, hence my hold on The Bronze Horseman. I also really want to read some Edward Rutherford - he wrote a similar book called London which follows several families through the millennia which I’ve always wanted to read and his book Sarum was recently recommended to me. There are some great books here - I love the fairy tale book! Reading is so much fun when you just follow your interests!

Russian folklore is a fascinating topic. It got me interested in folklore of other cultures as well. Before, I would've never guessed that folk tales / old wives' tales are super political. The first Russian folk tales collection I read was the one compiled by Afanasyev (read it for school, but totally works as a pleasure reading). If you are interested in the structure of Russian folktales, there's a book called Morphology of the Tale by Vladimir Propp that explores the common tropes and elements found in Russian folklore.

Hello my fellow Malaysian! Apa khabar? . Hope you are doing fine. Can't believe just stumbled on your channel now. Great to see a person intrested in Russian history and culture like you. Btw, I also bought both of the two Robert Massie's books; Peter the Great and Catherine the Great at Bookxcess. Just like you the size of those books seemed daunting for me at first. So during the MCO period, I picked up Peter the Great and start reading it. Boy oh boy, I can't put it down! The writing style is so fluid and beautiful while maintaining its factual basis. The author seems to have a novelistic instinct when writing this masterpiece. I must warn you that this book delved too much details on wars and Peter the Great's battles. For a military fan like me, I love it but for some people especially ladies it can be huge turn off. You can skip those parts if you want to. Considering myself as a slow reader, I managed to finish this 800 plus tome under one month. That book turns me into Russian history enthusiast and Robert Massie's fan. I ended up buying all of his books except Romanov the Last Chapter.

Until now, I've read Nicholas and Alexandra and Catherine the Great. I'm in the middle of reading his another book on WW1 called Dreadnought. Pretty phenomenal book too. I've read Catherine the Great biography and I found it to be interesting as well. Still a worthwhile read if you ask me. The style of writing is still remarkable and packed with many details. However, it is just my personal opinion that it couldn't capture the magic of Massie's Peter the Great. I noticed female readers prefer Catherine the Great more because of her romantic relationship with so many lovers that provide so much drama. It is also due to her prowess of being a strong female ruler that resonates well with the feminist desire of many women. Anyhow, there are lessons can be learned form these two great leaders regardless of gender or background. Highly recommended.

Nicholas and Alexandra was Massie's first book. This is a personal book for Robert Massie because his son suffers from hemophilia and Tsar Nicholas II's only son also suffer from this debilitating disease. I too have read this book and it is heart breakingly beautiful. The book describes the life of the Tsar Nicholas II, the empress and his family, also explains how the rogue Rasputin was able to wield such power over them. Information is based on letters written by many different people but is put together in a very engaging way. This book held my attention, taught me much about life at that time. Highly recommend as well.

I think i written too much. Please forgive me for my long comment. I just felt excited to see another Malaysian who has a similar interest and read the same books. Before I end, since you are interested in russian history and culture, please do look up Gulag Archipelego by Alexander Solzhenistyn. It tells a dark and interesting story of his life in Stalins's Gulag. It is hauntingly beautiful in its own way and very philosophically articulated. Can't recommended it highly enough. Thanks for the video and hope to see you soon. 👍
