It also turns out he used expired materials to make the submersible.
The repeated pressurizations and depressurizations is what led to the failure of the carbon fiber. It's similar to what happened to the aloha airlines jet where the aluminum peeled the way from the body due to material fatigue from repeated pressurizations and depressurizations.
