The Truth Behind How The Titan Imploded, According To Science

Everyone knows what an explosion looks like, but an _im_plosion feels a little more uncommon. But it's just as catastrophic, especially when it happens to a submersible craft deep within the ocean.

Unfortunately, some mistakes you only get to make once.

Carbon fiber is great in tension, but not so great in compression. Hull was supposed to be 7in thick but was wound to be 5in thick. Hull bonding methods were never tested so likely had voids in layers that created stress risers. Titanium End caps were resin bonded to hull in an untested manner. Electronics were all 2nd hand and never intended for harsh duty service. Cabling running external to hull in locations where it would be easy to snag. Multiple prior trips cancelled due to mechanical or electrical failure. Acoustic hull stress sensors were a waste of time for this type of usage. Minimal prototype testing showed there were issues so response was to stop testing. Acrylic porthole was installed in a manner that the dissimilar material issues were heightened not mitigated. What a joke. This wasnt pushing boundaries. This was slow motion suicide.

Delamination is what seems to have been the cause of the accident. Carbon fiber is subject to failing under pressure and low temperatures. The cylinder was 5 inches thick, but apparently over successive dives kept losing integrity to the point where it failed. This was indicated by 'cracking sounds' coming from the hull. They just ignored those. The RTM hull monitoring system installed on the Titan gave them the same feeling of false security that the watertight compartments of the Titanic gave to the White Star Line.

Honestly the more you think about it the more ridiculous the entire incident is. He made it out of leftover camper parts. Submersibles are not self powered they rely on the ship that they are connected with on the surface versus submarines are piloted on their own systems. The fact that submarines and remotely operated vehicles have made hundreds of visits without any incidents makes you wonder why people with billions of dollars couldn't have got together to make a safe vehicle. James Cameron has gone down there more than 30 times, why isn't anyone borrowing his? He's even gone deeper than the Titanic. There is no reason to cut corners if all of these people were supposed to be such enthusiastic explorers as they like to call themselves.

Not rocket science. Hull was made of carbon fiber instead of industry standard metallic. Titan's viewport was certified to 1, 300m depth. Titanic rests at 3, 800m. Ocean Gate played Russian roulette with each dive. Not a matter of if but when.

R.I.P. They said the 19 year old that died was scared to go on but only went because he wanted to please his father. This sub was offered to another father and son first but they passed it up because of the safety risks.

I have a hard time feeling sorry for this man. He was told numerous times of the titans safety issues and he either fired his naysayers or brushed them off in general. Fuck around and find out.
It’s just sad he took four people with him on his death trap

'OceanGate' Submarine seems like a 'HeavensGate' Cult.

If you're going to use carbon fiber... make it 10 times down to the bottom and back with no one inside. THEN build a new hull every single time and go maybe 5 times to the bottom with it. Basically you will need to treat the submarine as disposable after a few dives. Then again if you go with steel you can reuse it endlessly.

Carbon fibre hull is just trigger nuts. Thick thick steel is usually used for a damn good reason, this was just irresponsible and avoidable.

Here's the deal, it wouldn't have been a crack, but a poorly manufactured tiny tiny section of the hull. You wouldn't be able to see it without an electron microscope. Constant pressure loading over the years will have weakened it till this dive caused it to fail. The passengers will have gone from happy to being vapor in about 3000th of a second. They won't have felt, heard, or seen a thing. For comparison, 4 divers got sucked through a 2 inch gap when a compression bell was badly handled on a oil rig (Byford dolphin) they were pressurized to 600ft, the thing exploded like a bomb. These guys were pressurized to 13000ft. Utterly painless way to go.

This was a terrible disaster and I think to spend that kind of money to go so far down in the ocean is a bit scary to me!!💔

When you operate a submersible with a video game controller, you get a final destination.

Former OceanGate engineer Lochridge and experts had highlighted Rush's refusal to have the submersible properly inspected and certified.
The director said he had been told OceanGate was unwilling to pay for such an assessment.
Titan is a carbon fiber submersible that can travel as far as 4, 000 meters below sea level, the OceanGate website says. At the depth of the Titanic, which sits 3, 800 meters below sea level.
Lochridge also said that the submersible's viewpoint was only certified to work in depths of up to 1, 300m and claimed he had been fired by OceanGate after he questioned the safety of the Titan.
