Ya know thinking about this I mever really got it, if this is truely cannon and Batman did this its almost impossible that Joker would refuse. The only reason joker is joker is because he wanted to be acknowledged by Batman, he was only the joker because Batman was himself. So seeing that Batman was willing to help him and acknowledge him as an equal to help him and joker turning him away just doesn't make sense. Every time we see Batman completely disappear Joker always calls it quits because Batman is his motivation.

The implication in the original Killing Joke is that Batman kills the Joker at the end, after the joke, hence the title. Grant Morrison pointed it out.
