Marcus Aurelius’ Advice for Hard Days

Two thousand years ago, the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius wrote his personal thoughts and observations in a journal he titled “To Himself.”

It wasn’t meant for publication. It was simply where he reflected on the lessons he learned from the philosophy he lived by.

With the title “Roman Emperor,” you might think life would have been easy for Marcus Aurelius, but it wasn’t. His reign was consumed by war, a plague, and coups. Throughout all of this Marcus Aurelius was able to master his perceptions and see each obstacle as an opportunity to improve.

Marcus knew that he couldn’t control all that happened to him, but he could control how he responded. Thanks to his prolific journaling, we can study how Marcus dealt with hard days and how we can use Stoic philosophy to guide us through difficult times.

Whoever did the animations deserves a raise! Also Ryan, an animated series, on Netflix or the likes, of Marcus Aurelius' life or the inception of Stoicism would be a great way to share and spread the message.

If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment. Marcus Aurelius

I share posts like this with people who think the world is going to hell in a hand basket. In spite of all of the injustices hardships, and tragedies, there are still people like us out here fighting the good fight!

I needed this today. I woke up in a good mood. My drive into work I was psyching myself up mentally to be strong for the day. I told myself “you need to find the good in the bad. Even better, make the good from the bad.”
Within 10 minutes of starting my shift I was let go… been difficult to get back to that strong mindset and want to now use this time I have to better myself. I did start a new class a few weeks ago, so I already have that…
But man is it tough to get out of that mindstate

My family is going through some hardships right now, and we've just been been letting the weight of our problems slowly push us down. Then you released this video, and just when we needed it. All the most important people in our lives are healthy and well; we have food, clean water, flushing toilets, a place to bathe, and a roof over our heads. There is an end to this, I can see it more clearly now then I have in a while.

Thank you for continuing to spread Stoicism through these digestible meditations and inspirations. It really helps those of us struggling in the mire.

A couple of movie scenes I like to watch sometimes for inspiration are: 1) The opening scene of The Matrix when Trinity somersaults down a staircase and gets paralyzed with fear at the bottom, her gun pointed up the stairs. I love how she self-talks herself to GET. UP. 2) The official trailer for The Martian played at high volume, especially Matt Damon saying "I guarantee you, at some point, everything's going to go south on you. You're going to say, 'This is it. This is how I end.' Now you can either accept that, or you can get to work, " his incredibly positive attitude, and imaging that I'm from another world where my face is on billboards and people are awaiting my return! Sometimes fantasy helps. 😁In that same fantasy, I imagine how people will want to know everything about this horrible place I'm in, so I go into an objective anthropologist mode even in the worst of times. Just taking notes for a future lecture tour.

Marcus Aurelius' unwavering resilience in the face of countless adversities is a testament to the power of Stoicism. It's inspiring, though it does make me wonder if today's society is too quick to give in to despair. Are we lacking that kind of mental fortitude?

The choice to stand anyway, to do good anyway, to be good anyway, and spit and because of whatever might happen.
That wisdom is so beautiful!
I am in love with it❤

When life kicks me hard I lament it in private, for the face I wish the world to see is that face of happiness and resiliance. So others can see that no matter what, the light at the end of the tunnel is the light you carry with you through that tunnel to help you find your way with a smile on your face and a song in your heart.

Marcus' book offers strength and wisdom that millions can benefit from. If Marcus was alive for one day, I would thank him and hug him, he gave me the ability to change my life towards better.
