Marcus Aurelius' Advice For Better Days

It’s humbling to think that Marcus Aurelius, the head of the most powerful empire on earth, had the same amount of hours in the day as you.

Just 24.

So how did he get it all done?

How did he have time to be a king, a philosopher, a writer, a husband? To pass laws and judge cases? To lead troops into battle and guide Rome through a terrible plague? And do this while remaining good? Without being corrupted by the temptations or the stress of his position?

Well, routine had something to do it. He was a man of habit—all the Stoics were. They understood, as Aristotle did, that we are what we repeatedly do. That excellence is a habit.

It's funny that Marcus Aurelius, the most powerful man on Earth at a time, was once telling himself "get out of the bed already!" just like I do.

That’s why Meditations is the ultimate self-help guide: Marcus Aurelius had no idea that anyone would ever read it. He was chastising himself, not dispensing advice to others as a wannabe guru. From this I get an image of Marcus as someone who really liked to sleep in- just like I do. He was chastising himself to go against his desires and get out of bed.

One of my favorite Marcus Aurelius quotes: "Concentrate every minute like a Roman on doing what’s in front of you with precise and genuine seriousness, tenderly, willingly, with justice." We must discern the center, and learn to con-centrate. In all that we do. In a sense, life really is that simple, and that wonderful.

One of the greatest people of all time struggled with the same thing we all laziness. If someone so great had this problem and managed to negotiate himself out of it, maybe I can do the same. I always struggled with what mental state with which to approach the boring days of the week, how do I motivate, but this provided it. Thanks for the short video, helped a lot.

My favorite MA advice is to "welcome all that is brought to us by fate with affection."

"Affection" is just such a powerful word when you're in a rough space. Especially the idea of treating the difficult ITSELF with affection. Its been transformative for me.

When life presents to you a challenge to your character, ask yourself this very simple question; What would Marcus have done?

Such words of wisdom. Taking action is the greatest challenge. 6yrs off Alcohol today. After a decade of drinking. Still feel so alone. Still don't have friends or money. At least I'm alive. When death smiles, smile back. 😁

Marcus Aurelius was simply a man. A human being who recognized his own humanity. We often forget ourselves and become animals but it was clear that Aurelius wrote down his thoughts to remind himself that he was more than that and that is so inspiring that he became more than just human despite just being one.
