A screw holds to wood better than a nail because the threads grip the wood. If you hammer it in, the threads rip out the wood they would otherwise have gripped.

Our structural engineering prof in architecture school told us to watch out on the jobsite for carpenters using a "Swedish ratchet", AKA sledgehammer, for installing lag bolts (really large screws with a bolt head.) Hammering in a screw instead of screwing it in significantly reduces its load capacity in a number of directions. Note there were probably pre-drilled holes for the screws in the 2x4 as well as the right hand screw in the plywood. And screws in plywood parallel to the glue plane are never a good idea - not sure what the allowable loads are but splitting can occur due to moisture content changes in the future, and then you've got minimal load capacity if any at all.

Hammering screws takes every bit of the holding ability away.
You are literally stripping the wood away from the threads and the screws abilty to hold away.
