That’s a cold solder joint. The solder should be applied to the hot “twist”. Dipping a cold twist into hot solder is not a proper bond.

That’s probably going to be a cold solder joint. The wire should be heated and fluxed to make the solder flow properly.

Umm i mean i guess it could work?
Because i think you supposed to heat up the wire so the solder would flow to make the perfect connection, but the problem with this is that the liquid solder will probably cool down faster than the wire heat up only leaving a coat of solder

Wouldn’t this be useful for fixing a stripped screw?

If it were one that you had difficulty finding a replacement for, and you needed it, where ever it actually went, then couldn’t this process be used to recoat the screw so it was usable again?

I do this to add a cable connector I heat the cable connector in a vice fill with tin heat the cable end then dip it in keep it held heat a bit more stop let cool battery terminal cables are expensive and with classic cars certain lengths are hard to find so I buy a bit longer and shorten it up add new connector to the starter or ground side not the terminal and then I have the same as what was there not too short not to long .. perfect sized justifying this is halfway correct heat the joint then dip it

So I was reading some of these comments and like… yeah I get that this is janky and everything, but this information isn’t for you.

Let me put it this way; do you remember the “Snuggie”? Or any of those terrible infomercials where it looks like everyone’s a fucking idiot? That’s because these products, while marketed for everybody, are not actually intended for you.

If I told you that the Snuggie was actually designed almost exclusively for people in a wheelchair, you might be able to piece it all together.

Yes, this is a janky hack for most people, and is likely just poor advice all around. I’m not saying this video is 100% the same as the Snuggie, but one thing you may not have noticed is that everything you just watched could be done with one hand.

I think it’s more the theory than this exact application. I’m a hobbyist whose soldering experience is an elective tech course I took in highschool, and repairing/installing/rewiring guitar pickups. I’ve never seen anyone dip a wire into a cup of liquid metal before, and the comments were helpful for me if I ever do go to do something like that in the future…

But again, these weird tips aren’t necessarily designed for most people, and are prob more suited for extremely niche application, like someone with limited mobility. Not always, maybe not even this exact video, but it’s just something that a lot of people don’t understand, and could be useful information the next time you see a product or tool tip that makes you say “yeah, you COULD, but why?” 🤷🏻‍♂️
