It’s not usually the thermostat .. that’s just the cheapest point of call to check

Top causes in my experience:

1 - low coolant
2 - radiator cap
3 - stuck thermostat
4 - bad radiator fan motor/fuse
5 - you drive a Chevy

Im a mechanic and 18/20 times its a random coolant leak that went unnoticed until the level got too low. The other 2/20 are fans not coming on/fan clutch or the thermostat just randomly sticking closed it doesnt happen that often, at least in my experience

There no need to take the thermostat out to see if it bad or not, just start the car until the temperature gauge is in the middle then touch both hoses to see if it hot, if one is hot and the other cold or warm is the thermostat

Fun fact : if your car is overheating, the most common cause is low coolant. The most common failure of a thermostat is open in too soon or sticking open Resulting in low heat to the air conditioning, check engine light and slightly reduces mpgs. P0128- coolant temp below regulating temperature/threshold

In our case with most Vortec V8's from 2000-2003 they love eating the water pump gasket

There are much much easier ways to check and don't just instantly go for the thermostat. If you want to play part darts go ahead and waste your money but diagnose it if you want to actually figure out the problem.

My car overheated 2 hrs ago, my radiator cap was damaged n the coolant burnt out. And my thermostat was also damaged and kept sticking. Both resulting in the engine overheating

I haven’t ever worked on or around a Miata but I think the plastic bag on the engine might be contributing to the overheating.

be careful putting it back on tho
i broke my thermostat housing tighteing it back on bc the thrmostat had fallen out of place
and the problem is its a old car and it took ages to find the right one
i ended up getting a slightly different one which had a extra hole which i just filled in

Most modern cars have the thermostat on the lower hose. Look it up!

Wish mine was this easy, i literally have to take off my clutch fan, hoses, and radiator to get to mine. :/

Not a fun fact because it's not even remotely close to Accurate. ASE Certified mechanic here. Generally when your car is overheating it could be one of five or 10 different reasons and there is no frequency of one over the other. It with the exception of a coolant leak. But that's not a thermostat in my entire career as a mechanic I probably replaced a hundred thermostats but I probably replaced mm radiators in 1, 500 hoses and so on and so far

I guess touching the hoses when the cars around 190 degrees to see if the thermostat is open is out of the question. People really need to learn to diag cars before tearing things apart.
