Baked this bean casserole with a locally made smoked kielbasa. With all the spicy, hearty ingredients it was a symphony of flavor. Bridget, and Julia knocked it out of the park, again!

Kills me that folks who make comments A) without trying the recipe and B) without understanding how much goes into all America's Test Kitchen recipes. THIS is where you come for the BEST recipes!

I made this dish with polish sausage pieces in it instead of bratwurst. It was excellent! Great to serve with smoked brisket.

I did this recipe on our Pellet smoker recently - I left out the liquid smoke and just ran these at 225 for 3 hours. turned out great!! I'm doing these again tomorrow but will grill the bacon with the brats and onion and just mix into the dish instead of the shingle method.

Here is the recipe for the Best Barbecue Beans:

Ingredients:

1 and 1/4 pounds of bratwurst (casings removed)
6 slices of thick-cut bacon (cut into 1-inch pieces)
2 onions (chopped)
1/2 cup of bottled barbecue sauce
1/2 cup of ketchup
1/2 cup of water
2 tablespoons of spicy brown mustard
2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon of granulated garlic
1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon of liquid smoke
2 cans (28 ounces each) of baked beans
2 cans (15 ounces each) of cannellini beans (drained)
2 cans (15 ounces each) of pinto beans (drained)
1 can (10 ounces) of Rotel tomatoes (tomatoes with green chilies)
Instructions:

Cook the bratwurst in a skillet until the fat starts to render out. Break it down into smaller pieces and cook for about 5 minutes.
Cut the bacon into 1-inch pieces and cook them until crisp.
Use the rendered fat from the bratwurst to cook the chopped onions until browned.
In a bowl, mix together the barbecue sauce, ketchup, water, mustard, apple cider vinegar, granulated garlic, cayenne pepper, and liquid smoke.
Add the cooked onions and bratwurst to the sauce mixture and stir well.
Pour in the baked beans, cannellini beans, pinto beans, and Rotel tomatoes. Stir everything together until well combined.
Pour the bean mixture into a 13x9-inch baking dish and top with the cooked bacon, shingling it on top.
Bake in a preheated 350°F oven for 1 and a half hours, or until the sides are bubbling and the bacon turns dark brown.
Allow the beans to cool for 15 minutes before serving.
Enjoy your delicious barbecue beans!

Still holds up. Made this on the fly for a family cookout. 1/2 dozen people commented to me, “i’m not a big bean fan, but I could eat the whole container with a spoon.” Don’t substitute.
