Before I watched this video, I watched PS Audio's video about soundstage. In that video Paul described what a soundstage is, and I thought to myself, well, I think I've never heard the things he described, maybe because I only have a pair of cheap Edifier bookshelf, sitting on my computer table, right against the wall.

Then I search for speaker placement video tutorial and I found this. So I moved my speakers away from the wall and built a pair of simple speaker stands made from wood to rise the speaker to ear level. I was amazed by the result. Although the speakers are around 20 cm in front of the monitor, I can hear your voice in this video right on the monitor screen, behind the speakers. Music also sounds awesome. Finally I can hear what Paul described as soundstage.

And just like you said, the bass response is much more even compared to when the speakers are close to the wall. Great video. Thanks a lot

Informative video. Unfortunately, severe space limitations in my apartment prevent placement of my Kanto TUKs more than 9 inches from the wall. Same issue for my SVS SB-2000 subwoofer, which is on the floor to the right of my TUKs. Ironically, floor space is part of my reason for acquiring these specific units. Fortunately, imaging is pretty good and everything else can be electronically compensated for. The AMT tweeters are at roughly ear-level.

Great video with lots of useful tips, just like to add one more tip that could be a factor, and that is how level speakers are in pointing towards the listener, after watching this video I decided to check different aspects as mentioned, but then I checked the level of both speakers only to find one speaker was pointing slightly lower down towards the floor than the other one ! Hardly noticeable visually but a small difference at the speaker is multiplied several times by the time the soundwave reaches the listener ! I have noticed with my Q Acoustics 3050i speakers (Floor standers) that if I sit a few inches lower in the seat bass response is much higher, but if I sit normally the bass is less pronounced !
Unfortunately I don't have enough space in my living room to move things around, so limited in what I can do, but then I would say not too many people have the freedom to do most of the recommendations you gave us, but still useful to know this kind of stuff, thanks.

Great video, was gifted a nice 5.1 Yamaha system and didn't have a clue as how to setup a actual sound system. Instructions were clear and easily understandable to someone without a audio background.

Hey man, thanks so much for all the info in your videos. I myself am an audiophile and find it refreshing to conquer the basics and then some the way you do!!

Very good explanation. I can visualize applying all these steps to my setup. I'd like to do these experiments before I get caught up in the 'buy different equipment' syndrome.

It's a shame that 90% of the viewers of this video won't be able to set their speakers in the middle of the room.
At least he is entertaing to watch, especially when he talks while standing and bouncing.

Great general tips in an easy to digest delivery. I'll add after doing tons of research and training on this subject a few other tips.. Bass traps in the corners of the room can help a lot for tightening up the sound. London traps all around the listening area can help with early reflections. This is especially important between the listener and the speakers. To further tweak eq settings you can get a measurement mic and software. IK Multimedia has a nice system for this.

Keep in mind, that the final height of the speakers is even a bit lower if you lean back comfortably in an armchair or on the sofa instead of just sitting tensely on their front edge, as shown in the video. You don't sit like that for a long time and certainly not while listening to music in a relaxed manner, I don't do it myself and I don't know anyone who does it like that.
As perfect as that may be, I believe that only very few of us have the real possibility of realizing both our own listening position and the position of the speakers almost in the middle of the room as shown, especially if you don't live alone and others don't always have the right audiophile understanding for it. In real life you will have to make compromises.
bass response = i've heard it often, especially for subwoofers, that you should place the speakers in the listening position, of course with their front facing the room and with the music turned on, then you should walk slowly around the room in front of the speakers and then finally position them where you can hear the bass most comfortably, at least that's the theory.
But there should also be speakers where the positioning does not always have to be so strict because they are not so critical in terms of positioning, e.g. speakers with horn tweeters because of thier slightly wider sweetspot or specifically the "Q Acoustics 3030i", as only one example that I know myself.
Speakers that have a bass reflex opening on the front should also be able to be positioned closer to the wall ... for speakers with such an opening on the back, there are suitable foam inserts to reduce their bass output and the room reflections.
I'm not an expert, I'm just passing on what I've heard and read on this subject.
For further detailed informations I recommend for instance = "Loudspeaker placement short" by "The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel" or "Hifi Myths & Misconceptions - Placing Speakers Close To Walls" + "Hifi Myths & Misconceptions - Speaker Setup" both made by "A British Audiophile".

Jason, I like your explanation for two speakers. But, do you have suggestions for 5.1 systems composed by a Subwoofer and 5 satellites speakers ?

very unpractical in most living rooms to put speakers so far away from the wall.

Quick question. How can you be so busy with speaker placement and then use Spotify as a music source? Isn’t Spotify terrible in terms of audio quality?
