Heater Hose Disconnect: 5 to 15 minutes

If the firewall junction is more than 15 years old, it will likely break when you disconnect the lines. Be prepared to replace it.

This video will show you how to disconnect your heater hoses from the firewall coupling on the Volvo P80 series cars. The 850, S70, V70, XC70, etc.

You would want to disconnect these hoses if you plan to:
1. Replace the hoses.
2. Replace the coupling.
3. Bypass the heater core (5/8" hose to connect the two ends).
4. Rebuild the seals for preventive maintenance.

So happy to have you posting videos !  Just bought a 850 turbo for a daily driver and you have shown easy ways to fix the three issues I have.  You should take donations via PP!  Thanks!

Thanks for all the info Robert. You are helping me a lot. I have a small question please: under the thermostat housing i have a small pipe which last week burst and all the coolant came out. Its like 6 or 8 inches and it connects from top to bottom. As i said its located under the thermostat housing right under the sensor. Any idea what it is for? 1999 volvo v 70 base 2.4 non turbo auto box.

If i'm smelling coolant in the cab, but have none of the floor, it's still likely coming from the heater core, is that correct?  (yes, saw your great video on replacing the core and already ordered one) 95 850.  In other words, how likely is it that these seals at the firewall fail and cause an odor inside? (car has 82k)

I have a question for you Sir,
Can I drive my 2000 Volvo S70 for 1000km after disconnecting the gear oil hose from the radiator coolant and make connect it direct round?

Robert, I have a leaking heater core. Is it possible to disconnect the hoses at the firewall and still operate the car if I reconnect them to one another?

I really appreciate your helpful videos!  I am attempting to bypass the heater core in my 2004 Volvo s60.  I disconnected the hoses from the firewall (using the quick disconnect).  Instead of ports sticking out of the quick disconnects (still attached to the hoses), the ports are still sticking out of the firewall.  A 5/8" hose won't fit around those connectors, and I don't know how I could clamp it if I just stuck the bypass hose into those connector.  So, I don't know how to attach the bypass hose to the two hoses that run coolant through the engine.  Do you know a way to do this?

Robert so I have my heater hoses but the hoses themselves been cut off so my question is that I plug them in the fire wall but where do they plug into the engine themselves?

I saw your coupling video...looks simple enough...so perhaps, my firewall coupling is cracked...will I be able to reach in/down into the front end of the car or will I need to remove the coolant/water? (I've been using water because the car leaks when I turn it off/park it

hi robert, i wonder if you can help me ;) my check engine light came on. I saw just 2 days ago that my PRE-HEATER HOSE has a crack . Is it possible that this broken pre-heater hose is responsible for the check engine light, or what would you recommend to check on? thanks a lot! kris

Good Morning Robert. I have an issue with my o rings. i went to pull out the lower quick disconnect and the only thing that came out was the hose and the actual quick disconnect. it left all of the orings and plastic pieces in it. there is no engine bay room to really work with it. what kinda tool you think i can use to pull those out?

Hi Robert, I'm getting ready to order the heater core, coupling and hoses from FCP. The only thing that I don't see on the video is how  the heater hose is connected to the engine block. The weather has been really nasty here in NJ, so I haven't been able to get under the car. Can I reach the connection? Since my 850t5 is close to 20 yrs. old I figured that I would replace from heater core to engine block. What do you think?
Hope all is well.

Hi Robert,
Thanks. The heater core hose sprung a leak today a little before it went into the engine block. I managed to get a coupler and some 5/8 hose and splice it into the older hose to get me home. I don't smell any coolant, but those rubber hoses are pretty soft and I think I have the old style non-aluminum type that attach to the heater core. There is a lot of crud built up where one of the hoses enters the firewall. Guess I might as well just do the hoses and the heater core at the same time. It's gettin' hard to come up with the money for this stuff, since I just did the PCV system. Thanks for the video. Rick
