If the camera is a crop sensor instead of a full frame, would you recommend a 35mm then instead of the 50mm that you talk about in the video?

Great shout. I started using my 50 then forgot about getting one when I switched cameras. Its a good one to come back to.

I know this comment comes late but... I'm new to photography and having picked up a canon m50 And after playing with the kit lens for a bit, I snagged the old nifty fifty and viltrox speed booster and couldn't be happier with my photos. I have a much-hated 75-300 zoom as well and it works well in my opinion with the viltrox but my point here is you're totally on point about being closer to your subject and getting creative in shooting, rather than having to frame a subject, then zoom in, etc.. This is quite fun and I'm learning a ton. Thanx for the (old) video.

Totally agreed. I use GH5 with an Olympus 25mm f1.8 and love it.

This is an awesome exhortation for gear crazed nuts. Minimize your equipment and force yourself to think creatively to get something worth watching out of it.
After years of all kinds of shooting I now only use fully manual primes 95% of the time, and mostly hand held.
I have a set of Rokinon lenses (the 1.4 version). I choose them over the 1.5 click-less aperture ring, because the aperture adjustment is so easy to accidentally hit and ruin your exposure when you're shooting the click-less versions handheld.
I also have adapters with throttle variable ND filters for my different cameras, so I never have to use NDs on the front elements of the lenses. One variable ND filter placed in the adapter between the back lens element and the sensor "to rule them all." Awesome. Who needs Gollum's ring when you have that!?
It's such an awesome way to shoot---plus, you get exercise when you can zoom. (I hate exercise).
Such a bargain! And speaking about a bargain--man, your videos are great--so well presented, so clear! So, like, why don't you have a million subscribers?!?

Thanks for the great vid!
I bought a cheap 50mm Yongnuo f 1.8 for my very old canon EOS 400D which doesn't shoot video but it opened up my eyes to the concept of aperture as well as ISO. I managed to capture some great photos at a couple of milestone family birthday celebrations that just would not have been possible with my original kit lens due to some very low light situations (I refuse to use the built in flash). I have learnt recently though, that you need to take the crop factor in consideration so my 50mm prime is actually more like an 80mm on an APS-C sensor. So, next lens on the list is a decent 35mm. I haven't fully settled into exactly what I want to do with my photography as I am still an amateur(unpaid) but I have interests in food photography (I'm a chef), extreme sports, nature, motorcycles, portraits, weddings - pretty much anything really!

I love shooting with the 50mm but I feel like there's no chance to shoot video freehand. You'd HAVE to use a gimbal to get a steady shot. What gimbal are you using in this video, at 2:26?

I came to learn whether my 50mm would be enough, and stayed for all the extra value add. Great content bro!

First lenses I purchased for my Nikon D3300 and Lumix G7 were their 50mm equivalents, the Nikon AF-S DX 35mm f/1.8G and the Lumix G 25mm f/1.7. Great lenses for the price.

Dude Totally agree and it was a good reminder to practice with primes to force you to get better at your craft. Thanks for that advice!

A am a novice when it comes to this stuff. I recently bought a Canon M50. Do you recommend the 50 mm lens for that?

I use my canon 35mm IS on my Fujifilm and it is such a great combo, having that 50mm focal length image stabilised is so helpful for run n gun filmmaking and photography
