Traded my primes for a 24-70 thinking I would be more versatile and hated the photos I took. Sold it and built my lens collection around a 35 & 85 growing out from there

It depends on what you photograph. My primary is a 600 prime. Second is a 100-400. Third, a 100 macro. All for wildlife. I use a 24-70 for people. But the 100 macro can fill in nicely for people also.

I just saw another video of yours that said the only 3 lenses that I need as a photographer, and they were totally different lenses. Confused! ;)

As a wildlife photographer I use two lenses. A 18mm -300 mm Sigma and a 150mm -600mm Sigma. Simply dont need any others.

I use 55-250mm EFS IS STM for aviation photography, EFS STM 18-55mm for in-flight filming, and EF 50mm F1.8 STM for portraits and daily use

24-105 just soo underrated! I'm so happy I picked up one of them instead of a 24-70. It's lighter and you have more range. Most of them are f4 I can understand if thats a deal breaker but f4 seems to be good for me...

I just bought the 24-105 2.8, have the 70-200 f4 and the 200-800. I also have the 50mm f1.8 for special use cases. For my use cases which are motorsport and festivals/concerts etc. it’s the perfect combination.

I started out shooting with a 85 mm equivalent prime lens and recently picked up a 24-70 equivalent zoom lens but oh boy how much I prefer the 85 over the 24-70

I’ve literally taken so many kinds of photos with the 85, like portrait, landscape, street, and more
Prime lenses are the absolute best

If you using sony, add the 12-24mm GM F2.8 and you are perfectly paired

I agree whole heartedly. I would also add on getting a single prime like a 28mm 1.4 which is great for portraits and also low light.

Speaking as a wedding photographer, absolutely right. Only time I swap to a prime is when I can’t use flash and it’s dark which is seldom. 2 bodies with each of those lenses and I’m covered for the whole day

In aviation you only really need two lenses: one for closeups (stuff on the group closeup) and of course, one for things in the air. I first got a DSLR with the standard EF-S 18-55 and 75-300 and quickly replaced both with a 18-135 (more range for a broader area of things to photograph) and a 150-600 (can get the scope of most flying things perfectly). Two of the best lenses I could ever purchase, does the job perfectly.

New at photography and we got the 24-70 2.8 and it covers the bulk of out needs. The main one that we’re eye balling next is exactly the second one recommended here. Due to budget I am currently leaning towards the f4 though.

….In general great advice when you’re starting out. I did the same back in 2006 for my Canon 5d, got myself a 24-70 and a 70-200 both f2.8. It’s the advice a lot of people give.
However - these lenses are still expensive.
There’s heavy - very heavy compared to primes.

I used to use my 24-70 mainly for landscapes - so traded it for a 21mm Zeiss Distagon prime. Spectacularly sharp and much more compact and lighter.

Same with the 70-200mm. Replaced this with a 135 Zeiss f2 Apo Sonnar - again super sharp and just a pleasure to use.

Zooms are practical for focal length yes. Primes are practical in that they give the best results. Of course if I was doing wedding (I don’t) then perhaps I need the flexibility. But once you know what you’re shooting (and this comes from experience) - it’s wiser to build up a range of lenses for each particular need.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I was under the impression that it’s better for portraiture to have primes @ 20mm, 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm (maybe 135mm if you know you’ll be far away). Then having a great all rounder zoom lens from 35-150mm (like the Tamron f2.8) for higher action shots. Then just a telephoto up to 600mm if you need it for sports/wildlife etc.

Tarmon 35-150. The only lens I need for 90%

16-35mm f/2.8 and use your camera's megapixels to zoom. That single lens covers everything.
