"General remodeling" killed me, especially with how quickly you moved past it.

He's not saying a halberd was the first choice for firefighting. They were used because the guards had them in hand. It's usually better to do something fast than wait for the ideal tools.

Imagine getting a knock on your door one day and being informed that your neighbor lit his house on fire and so now some guys are going to smash apart yours and everything in it.

People dont give people from the past enough credit.
They werent stupid, they took what they had and made it work
Punching holes in the roof to direct the fire up instead of out is not something id even heard off and its really ingenious to me
Theres a really good scene in the anime movie Miss Hokusai where they show the technique of Japanese fire crews

It's interesting to consider that the Boarding Axe, made so famous by the age of sail, is a similar kind if implement, useful not only as a simple yet effect weapon, but also, and likely more commonly, used as a tool of cutting ropes, fighting fires and helping move heavy objects

This is awesome! I'm gonna show this to my coworkers at the firehouse! And you're pretty spot on. In row houses in the 16 and 1700s in Europe and America, a tactic was to place hooks on the supports of affected buildings and use horse teams to pull the out into the street to prevent exposures. But yeah a halberd is both an axe and pike pole all in one. I had never considered that.

I like that you just take your channel in whatever direction it's going it's neat.

I remember hearing that firefighting during the Great Fire of London included destroying buildings. Guess they also used halberds to do it

This is honestly fascinating. Most people think of firefighting as dumping LOADS of non-flamible material on fires (water and other chemicals) and I was curious when you mentioned Halberds as firefighting tools

Basically you can use it as a New York hook, a fire axe, or a Haligan, and all in an age where gas powered or hydraulic support equipment don't really exist.

Well, their design literally says “medieval problems require medieval solutions” and I find it to be very smart!

Usually if I send a Pikeman into a firefight, I consider that game of Civilization lost.

I did not know that Halberds were used for fighting fires, but with your explanation, it's perfectly clear WHY they were. Thanks!

Impressive. Very nice. Let's see Paul Allen's suit...

IMO Lindybeige has the best explanation of halberds

Before they invented "fight fire with fire" or "fight fire with water" they tried fighting fire with weapons.

That is absolutely amazing. Before I even watched the video when you said used for fire fighting my brain clicked. That is such common sense i feel stupid.
