I'm scared to begin going to a doctor.
I don't know if I have autism or aspergers. I feel too anxious to go out most days.
I know something is wrong with me, I am scared that I will be invalidated.

When I found out about Aspergers and started to realize stuff about myself, and I decided I wanted to go get a professional diagnosis.
I started "scripting" the interview in my head for a good 3 weeks. Not because I was trying to influence the outcome, but because I had never been to a psychologist before and It helped take away some of the anxiety so I wasn't totally unprepared.

Although, when I was going into the interview and during the interview, my pulse was ~150 and I had insane anxiety, so I don't know how much it helped. But it helped me remember what I was going to say at least.

Do other people hold their hands to their chest? I tend to do this when I'm walking or especially when I'm nervous. It's like a shield between me and everything else.

When I told my mother that I think it might be worth seeing an autism specialist, she flat out said “you don’t have it” but I’ve noticed things, and lots of people have noticed things about me that would warrant me getting checked out, have people had this before, what was the process like for you?

For me the diagnosis was easy. Trying to make others understand even the small stuff is the most difficult part.

When I had to do my diagnosis, I had to come in at 7 am, and I was worried the night before, so I may have gotten to sleep at 2am because of that. I hardly stay up past 1am now, which is good. I realized in my diagnosis papers they said that I had atypical responses. Like, when I had been told to answer what grief means, I had said "to mourn someone's loss"... made me facepalm so hard after realizing what I had said. xD

I got my official diagnosis back in 2015 over 3 sessions. First was a consultation second was the actual assessment that took about 3 hrs and then they had me come back a week or so later and told me my results. The assessment also showed I have clinical depression (which I’ve dealt with majority of my life) he suggested I go back on meds to help that and my anxiety. I found it helped a lot that I brought one of my stim toys (a stress ball in the shape of a brain my mom gave me)

I’m from Ohio (USA)!
I have ASD and anxiety and it sucks at times, but it also is good at times. I love watching your videos, and they help me cope and find good ways to explain to my friends how I feel.

Found your channel recently and so pleased. My son is 12 with autism. Diagnosed age 3, grown up with it and hates everything about it as thinks he is different to his cousins etc. He is luckily in an all autism school. I’m watching from Middlesbrough. I will encourage my son to watch you, think you’re brilliant.

It's tough to find any Asperger's resources in the USA, particularly for an older person. Really frustrating.

I just went through the main interview process (and am still doing the paper questionnaires) and I would also suggest to alleviate the stress of it, bring a fidget toy to the office. I was so nervous and luckily the doc had some fidget toys I could borrow while I was being interviewed. But if you have your own, definitely bring one. 👍

I've recently been diagnosed with autism, and these are awesome tips! I was so stressed and anxious during the time it took from my first appointment to my final one when I got the result. I live in Norway and it took a total of 3 months, had interviews, verbal and non-verbal tests and filled out different forms. I have a problem getting across important information in an interview situation, so I wish I had taken notes before I got there, did it for my third appointment and it helped tremendously. Thank you for all your great videos Dan! Keep up the good work!

Here in Hackney they diagnose you over 3-4 separate sessions, initial screening session, verbal session with a psychologist, verbal session with a psychiatrist and then possibly the ADOS. It is similar where my cousin lives, in a different health authority in North Wales to yourself.

hi Dan i am (as far as i know) a neurotypical who is a psychotherapist encountering autism/asperger's frequently among clients whether it is the person him/herself or their children and other loved ones; maybe you could do a bit on how aspies go through different developmental stages and how the expectable challenges each life stage presents can manifest for the aspie in specific ways; trying to get up to par fact-wise ASAP but mainly i really appreciate your attitude and joy in living and wanted to shout that out; it is a true joy watching your episodes

I had a single 3 hour interview and was told at the end that I have ASD and possible dyspraxia. I’m 34, from Scotland.
