There are lots of benefits from having an official autism diagnosis like access to help and support in the areas you need it most.

But it is not always simple to know how to diagnose autism. This is why I have made this step by step guide on how to go about getting an official autism diagnosis either for yourself or someone you are helping

STEPS

1 Create a list of all quirks and interesting differences that the person in question does out of ordinary.

2 Take an online AQ test and record the score / print out the results.

3 Call your doctor and ask for an appointment to discuss a referral for autism.

4 Ask your doctor if you can have a referral for an autism assessment based off your list and results.

5 Expect 2-3 assessments in the autism assessment process

6 Observe your results and apply the recommend help and therapy

Some cases, in some countries autism assessments can take up to 2 years to book, you can always opt for a private assessment but it probably will cost.

My son was diagnosed with autism when he was 2, he is now 4. I just got my diagnosis yesterday at 30! Because we present so differently I hadn't even considered I might be on the spectrum. I just thought I had really bad depression and anxiety. He helped me realize all my struggles throughout life were because of my autism and that it's ok and I can get support, too. Now I feel like I can take better care of myself and my son :)

I have a diagnosis scheduled with my gf in less than 2 weeks. Long story short I have been told by family and doctors that I do AND do not have autism for 28 years. Not knowing what I have has taken a major toll on my relationships, so nervous to find out once and for all. Thanks Dan!

Public health in British Columbia won’t send an adult for an assessment unless there’s evidence of disability.
Private is about $2700.00 CDN.
Public mental health services are really struggling here.

I am a 53-years-old and about to try and get diagnosed on the spectrum, I’m absolutely sure I’m on it I’ve just reached the point where it would help me to know. I’m very grateful for your videos they’re really informative. May I mention one thing… The extremely quiet music is very distracting for me. I have multiple forms of synesthesia, and one of the negative aspects of this is if something has multiple sources of audio I can’t focus on any one of them. So I really struggle with how everyone on YouTube puts music in the background, I’m not sure why it’s not at all necessary.

I was very fortunate to be diagnosed with Asperger’s when I was in the fourth grade and I sent to see some specialist therapist in the U.K and managed to complete parts of educations from London to Dubai which is where I am from. Though I had to develop coping strategies to stay sane with only financial support from my parents and no emotional support either.

I'm currently on the waiting list for an assessment for ASD. My AQ results shocked me as it said that there's a strong probability I have Aspergers/ASD. It kind of made a lot of sense of things. I've been struggling all my life in social situations. I'm female and now 33. I've been waiting a year for an assessment and losing my mind... I need to know 😩

Well said Dan. My diagnosis process was different. Under different circumstances. I actually got the diagnosis during the covid pandemic so I haven't even met with my case worker yet.

My assessment is scheduled for 2 weeks from today. I'm getting it because it's the only way I will be accommodated at work (a Medical society of all places!).

That actually makes me pretty sad that I need a diagnosis to be believed when I say it's too bright/loud/cold, etc. Or, the biggest one WORKING FROM HOME (which I have done at this job since 3/17/20) is MUCH better for me AND my work.

My boss is great, but literally told me to go get a diagnosis because it the only way the company is going to do anything for me. HE recognized the symptoms in me. I already knew it, but it's pretty rare that people aren't just chalking me up to be a weirdo and just writing me off.

What's your opinion on self-diagnosing? Different autistics take different stances, and I'm wondering where you are on that. For a lot of people, autism diagnoses take a long time or are very expensive. I'm not autistic (that I know of)so I don't feel comfortable answering that. I know I am neurodivergent (I'm gifted, and there are a lot of similarities between autistics and gifted individuals, and gifted children and people are counted as being neurodivergent), but giftedness and autism are different in terms of diagnosis and some of the symptoms and all that. I'm just wondering whether you think people can/should self-diagnose, as long as they are doing their research correctly.

I LOVE your videos Dan. I think some of us are scared to get an assessment, because we're scared of being ridiculed by the doctor or psychiatrist.. that's the reason I've held back, and I know a lot of other people who have too

I really want to pursue a diagnosis but I'm worried of wasting people's time. I got a 21 on the assessment test and that doesn't feel high enough to me. The questions were really hard to answer because I feel like it depends on the situation a lot of the time, at least for me.

For those concerned with the cost of testing, check with a University clinic. When trying to get my youngest daughter diagnosed (in the US), her dr said ADD and that it was up to her school phsycologist to diagnose Autism. The school said it was up to her doctor. My oldest daughter was in grad school and working in her university's phsycology clinic and told me that part of their training was diagnostic training. I found that they also offered this service at a great discount and worked with me to get the price down to what I could afford! (Less than $100). The testing was done by 3rd year grad students with full supervision and the diagnosis was approved by the clinical psychologist. Within a month we finally had a complete diagnosis! Hope this helps someone!

Since my daughter got tested. (thanks for the info in ur video on where to turn for have learned a LOT from your channel. Ty for making these videos! They're Super informative to The Neuro typical parents. Because I was able to learn from these videos just what it was I was seeing, where to go for testing, and how to interpret these results, I was able to get her tested, results, and now we are getting her the help she needed for her conditions.

A diagnosis is like gold-dusted rocking-horse shite around here. You never see the same doctor twice and none of them want to get involved.

Great advice! I did this earlier this year and got referred to an adult autism specialist unit. They did a "screening" first by sending me loads of forms (including AQ and EQ tests) and questionnaires, including one for my family (we filled it out during a Skype chat, and it was actually kind of fun!). Now I'm waiting for a date for my full assessment and interview. The hardest part for me was calling the GP, because I absolutely hate making phone calls! But it was worth it, I think.

You made a good point about the reasons we seek a diagnosis. I am doing this for my husband, who I am 99% sure he has it. We've been married 7 years and it's taken me a while to figure out how he's different. In some ways, it's infuriatingly hard to understand why he does the things he does and in other ways it's inspiring, like his cleanliness, and strict discipline and orderly life. The reason I'm looking into this now (he's 45), I can see how this affects his life -even if he doesn't. I go visit with his grown children and I see him interacting with them. He doesn't hardly speak at all. So I wonder how he will grow his relationship with them. And would it help if they knew, that he truly cannot help it. I think it would. I know it has helped me understand him so much better. So that's why I'm seeking a diagnosis for him. To say to them, this is what it is, this why he is the way he is, and let's work together to help him or at least understand him better. Because he truly cares about the small circle of people in his life, even if he doesn't or can't express it.

In the UK the waiting list is 4 years, what a joke I'm 28 undiagnosed and can't get help without it
