Many years ago in a bush war us ground troops preffered the Impala fighter to the mirage. The impala would come around sooner after a strike to assist us on the ground.

The A10 is a specifically built air support platform.

The F16 was designed as a cheap back up to the F15.

The F35 is a stealth multi role platform, so it's logical that it won't perform as well as a purpose built platform.

In contested airspace, the F35 will do better at ground support then the A10 which would get shot down in huge numbers.

They are trying to look ahead, not behind.

Both planes have a purpose, the A-10 is good for covering for ground control, and helping the troops, at slower speeds, the F-35, is the stealthy surprise fighter, that that is better in the high altitude as a dog fighter!

The cannon is only capable of engaging light vehicles and early cold war era tanks. No modern armored vehicle is vulnerable to the GAU 8 avenger. Also, the bullet spread gives it the dubious honor of most blue on blue kills from any air force platform. The advantage of the a-10 has always been its ease of maintenance, low cost, and its ability to carry lots of precision guided bombs while loitering above the battlefield. Personally, I think they should build a large drone like the global hawk to drop bombs from a great height and give it to the army. Let the f-35 do the rapid deployment missions and contested airspace stuff.

Everyone is saying that these can’t be compared cuz they serve different roles, the F35 was designed to replace specialized airframes like the A10 and F16, the guy says the GAU8 is designed to take out armored targets… yeah from the 1980s, it’s good for lightly armored vehicles now but tanks nowadays are more resistant and now require missiles bombs or rockets, the F35 was designed to be cheaper than fielding multiple airframes, the ones being replaced by it. Love the A10 and F16, I’ve seen them in action on several occasions, they were good in COIN operations but they won’t hold up in a modern LSCO fight.

Edit: just cuz the results of the test aren’t available to the public don’t mean the F35 performed poorly, they’re more than likely classified due to how new the F35 is

The A10 proved that it was still superior in its role.. that's why pentagon not to long ago ordered every A10 to be designed to last for Decades while doubling down on the F35 with a few modifications.. so the A10 & F35 support each other to their fullest capabilities
