Taliban's Ban on Women's & Girls' Education: Is it Islamic? | Dr. Shabir Ally

You asked, we answered! "Are there any Islamic reasons for the Taliban to ban women from attending university, or are the reasons cultural or political?" Dr. Shabir Ally says his interest is in Islamic arguments. He says the arguments commonly made to restrict women's education don't align with the Quran's emphasis on pursuing knowledge or the reality that women in early Islam were actively trading in knowledge. He says the Taliban is fearful that any sort of mingling between men and women will lead to adultery but cautions us to think of the big picture and recognize that a degree of tolerance for sin must be built into the system. This latitude is already built into Islamic law. Dr. Shabir reminds us that even after guidelines about interactions and clothing were established in the Quran, women were active, to the extent that Aisha led a group of people into battle. So women were not excluded from society.

There is tons that Taliban believe that is cultural and not Islamic. Cultural bias has a huge influence on people's interpretation of the Quran. Confirmation bias affects all of us.

“You can impose a certain degree of piety on yourself, but not on society in general.” I feel like that line sums up a LOT.

Very Wisely Said.
Hope the Taliban Listens to this and Make Necessary Arrangements for Re Initiating the Women to Learn. Education was never a barrier to Women in Islam. Neither it will be in any Islamic State. If Taliban is Islamic State, then it will Reinitiate the Education of Girls & Women soon.

3:10 To paraphrase, if men and women attend school or work together then sin will likely occur, but if they are kept seperate then society will be free from sin. Nonsense. I will take the best workers and best students over the worst whether they be men, women or cats.

So basically the Taliban can’t even properly understand their holiest scripture they claim to worship.

It’s almost as if they didn’t read the Quaran.

We MUST understand that the influence of culture specifically Pashtunwali is so strong in Pashtun society that in many cases many laws of culture are given superiority over Islamic law.
For e.g If a person is blamed for Adultery, Pashtunwali will command to directly kill the person for honours sake whereas in Islam every sin which a person is accused of needs to be investigated thoroughly and the final decision will be that of the vizier ( Islamic Judge).

I have always been told that taliban regime is one of the greatest regime for muslim ummah...but the things i have been reading about them always contradicted. I always had this doubt in my head that whether what they are doing is islamic or not. And guess what, i got the answer. They are doing unislamic things in the name of islamic and pious practices. Thanks to the sheikh👏🏻

people are outraged by this, but let`s be honest here - 100 years ago in europe it wasn`t that common for a girl to get anything else than elementary school. Hell, in 1940s it still was fine for a grown man to marry 12 years old.
I`m not protecting talibans by any means, but their religion isn`t everything in this case, it`s just their cultural biases, they need to outgrow it, evolve their society on their own. We already tried to influence them forcefully, and look how it ended...

Isn't it possible that it is because of their savage Buddhist heritage that the pure and sublime teachings of Islam got obfuscated?

Why sahaba prohibited women to attend masjid for prayer? What about nowedays situation? Nowedays pornography is available for all Muslim world, you are talking about tolerance.

Did Shabir skip the time Muhammad said women are half as intelligent as men? If I missed it, please put a timestamp in a reply.
Was it intentional or accidental that he did not bring it up?

Afghanistan is a conservative islamic country, in order to cast themselves as a religious movement, and themselves as superior and everybody else as inferior, they have to be more radical in their religion.

As Salaam Alaakum. Taliban is plural for Talib, which means student. If you're in Islamic study you are Technically a Taliban.
