'Gender Apartheid': Taliban Approves Law in Afghanistan Requiring Women Remain Silent in Public

The Taliban government in Afghanistan is drawing renewed outrage over a new law banning women's voices in public, forcing them to completely cover their bodies and faces out of the home, and more. This comes after the Taliban banned women from working in most fields and ended girls' education past primary school following their takeover of the country in 2021. We speak with Sima Samar, an Afghan human rights advocate and doctor who chaired the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission from 2002 until 2019; she also briefly served as minister of women's affairs in the interim Afghan government in 2002, after a U.S.-led coalition toppled the first Taliban government for its support of al-Qaeda. "You cannot see such a law in any other regime on this planet," she says. "This is a crime against humanity. It is gender apartheid."

Women hold up half the sky. They shouldn’t have to put up with that crap.

Only the people can free themselves. Silence from men is complicity.

When will we stop stealing each other's hopes and lives? When will we stop harming each other? When will we stop making life unlivable for others?

How does food appear in the houses of talibanistan mothers? Is it magic, do the men go shopping? How can you go shopping in a food market without speaking? And if you are also managing your children ... this is just inhumane AND insane.

They say a society that oppresses its women is doomed to decay. This could not be more true in the case of this tragic, once beautiful country.

Fun fact: Women in Afghanistan were the freest when they were allied with the old Soviet Union.

Well, the world is going through a period of religious extremism, in the east there is Muslim extremism, in the west it is Evangelical extremism. The misuse of religion is usually very dangerous for many groups of people

I worked with a guy from Afghanistan who had been a translator for the US military. The way he talked about the country was always heartbreaking. He described at as "going through a little bit of a rough time" in the same way that we might describe a rough storm that knocked down a few power lines. It was like he couldn't bring himself to admit the reality.

Sad reality that this is hidden feelings of so so many men from so many countries no matter what religion they follow.

The men in Afghanistan have had multiple opportunities to change their government to a much less oppressive one. They didn't want to change. I feel sorry for the women and girls but not the men.

So glad the US and allies wasted over 20 years in Afghanistan to be back at square one

What is going on with the entire world now? Old regimes need to topple, all the oppression needs to end. Let people be free ❤

I will always blame the CIA since the Soviet-Afghan War. All the hardliners holding power or terror groups wreaking havoc in these countries trace their origins to that single event, that then became a standard policy of control to undermine countries with a muslim majority. It always leads to a fall-out of these groups with the US that raised them in the first place and is followed by handing power to fascist military vassals to curb freedoms under the guise of war on terror, with the occasional coup removing civil rule to get to the last point. Only the locals pay the price throughout this ordeal.

Meanwhile the GOP ask how to get american women to do the same.

The Taliban regime has cut off women from all rights that a woman should have as a woman and as a human being.
Taking this tragic circumstance into account, it must be noted that in 20 years the occupation has not created a material basis for women to assert themselves. This woman, Sima Samar, had tons of money, but instead of working for the women, she worked for the occupation, which was opposed by the majority of the Afghan population.😢😢

If all this is to ensure the ‘safety’ of women then the men of Afghanistan are in serious need of some self control.
Stop waving your guns around and grow up.

I feel really sad to see women from Afghanistan. They were born as humans, but they are treated like dust bins or something else that must be completely covered in public

Protest? To be killed like in Iran? These women want to live. What was the result in Iran? How many died in vain? The life of each person is unique. The entire world should boycott Afghanistan, stop to trade with them and freeze all the diplomatic connections. People just talk. Nobody does anything. Sad.😢
