I love Trunks for this. He's kind hearted, but he's nowhere near soft. He will kill if he has to. I see him as the perfect blend of Goku and Vegeta.

Also a lot of these comments make a good point.
Vegeta keeps calling him Trunks soft and weak because he isn't as ruthless or heartless as he is during battles, which *Is* somewhat valid.
But at the same time, he comes from a future where nearly all of his loved ones are DEAD, and he's grown up witnessing genocide his entire life.
Vegeta's hearr is hardened as a result of serving Friezs and losing his planet, BUT, Trunks had been struggling through an ongoing battle in HIS case, while Vegeta served snd followed orders.
And to wrap it up he grew up hearing stories about his father and everyone else as legendary warriors, and now there's his father, giving the enemy permission to become unstoppable and destroy everything.
He's witnessed so much loss, pain and torment throughout his ENTIRE life, and now his own fsther is about to cause it to happen again,
At that point, there wasn't a shred of goodness or kindheartedness inside of Trunks' that would've stopped him from shooting that blast.
