The Ioniq 5 N is the brand's first branch out to high performance EVs, but is it a good one? Richard Ingram's gone out to Korea for an early drive, and on first appearance Hyundai might well have nailed it!

I encountered this on the highway in Korea. I floored it in a model 3 to see what the driver would do and it just flew away like a rocketship

I'm a BMW guy and I'm seriously considering this car.

Love how sinister it looks, especially in the black

Dimensions : Ioniq 5N: Length 4, 715 mm, Width 1, 940 mm, Height 1, 585 mm, Range Rover Evoque: 4, 371mm, 1, 996mm, 1, 649mm. Not sure I'd call it a hatchback :(

It will all come down to the price and if it is over £40K and I think it will probably be in the 50K to 60K mark, it is just too much, especially for what a hot hatch is all about, great fun, usuability all wrapped in a decent price that the everyday person can just about afford. Not sure what is going on in the world but prices are beyond the absurd across the board and a group of who knows who is laughing at us as we suffer this crazzyness...

Judging by the review it's pretty capable, but a 2 ton hot hatch with fake sound effects isn't particularly appealing. And for that price you can get a regular Ioniq 5 and an i20 N.

The best thing about the fake transmission shifts and engine sounds is that nonsense can be turned off.

good luck selling these when a standard i5 starts at 45k and theres loads sitting in stock they cant sell

It looks great and yes rapid but like the Kia EV6 GT drive it hard and that range will fall of a cliff. But unlike the Kia GT it looks more the part. The only problem with that is your likely to get every one try to race you off the line so self discipline is needed.

It look juvenile. Too bad you can't just get it in a solid color.

Great effort Hyundai, but this is just too big and too expensive to be touted as a hot hatch.

Maybe fun for an EV, but that weight, looks, lack of engine character and some pretend noise doesn’t really hit the fun button for me I’m afraid.

Am I the only one who thinks the standard Ioniq 5 shape already looks dated? I see one on the road and can't help think it looks like it's from the 1980s.

For me, this admittedly attractive ev offers too many complex features, which I believe may be a strategic mistake. Most people prefer relative simplicity and ease of use. It’s hard to justify paying over 60k for these seldom-used options. The 4-wheel drive configuration is a good example; it’s interesting for R&D but not a selling point for most people. Why spend over 60k on an EV that’s essentially in the same category as the VW ID3, or a 35-40k car? At this price point, one could consider a Tesla, Audi or a basic Porsche Macan instead. However, if these features were available for under 35k, it might just be more appealing.

Isn't he on CarBuyer? That side doesn't seem to do as many reviews anymore.
