Over 600hp and 770Nm (!) of torque means the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N isn't your average electric car. Using two electric motors and an 84kWh battery, this Hyundai has the performance to rival supercars, yet it looks like a beefed-up family hatchback. And that's not even the wildest thing about it.

With technology capable of simulating gear shifts and the feel and sound of a petrol engine, this Ioniq 5 N goes where no other EV (or car for that matter) has gone before. It promises to be as exciting as a petrol supercar, or as quiet and city-friendly as a standard Ioniq 5.

So has Hyundai created a car that can really do it all, or is this just a faker in a bold outfit? Join Sam Sheehan as he explains why there's so much more to this car than numbers and simulated sounds...

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 was designed and tested thoroughly by Hyundai's N division at the Nurburgring. This team consists of engineers who were headed by Albert Biermann (legendary suspension and chassis engineer formerly of BMW for 30 years) before his retirement, which is why we have great expectations of this Ioniq 5 N despite the challenge of working around its 2.2-tonne weight. Could this be the new benchmark, not just for EV hatchbacks, but for all hot hatches? Sam Sheehan seems to think so. However, having also reviewed the Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce, he's keen to put these two in a head-to-head to find out which is the most effective at stretching a grin across his face. Had my non N Ioniq 5 for over 2 years now, it works for us, caused us zero issues, test drove the N, and yes, very nice, I would defo have another Ioniq5

I test drove a lot of fast EVs and this by far has the best performance and dynamics match. it allows you to drive quickly on road with confidence cause It’s designed for spades more.

Im so happy that in the EV age, we're finally getting some genuinely fun EVs like this Hyundai and the Alfa Junior 😃🙌. I think a twin test would certainly be interesting to see 😄❤👀

I'm hesitant to buy an EV after seeing the fire accident of a Mercedes EV using cheap Chinese batteries, but I will buy a Hyundai EV someday.

Worth noting, i sat in one (iam 6 ft 5" ) and as an EV driver was genuinely surprised how low you seat in the ports front seats, so even before all the electronic wizardry, you feel " sporty' when you get in it.
