Correction: It does not "keep you asleep" during surgery. It keeps you "unconscious." If you're asleep you can be awakened. If you're getting this stuff you can't be aroused until whoever's giving it decides to stop giving it. And when it's stopped and you come to, you will not remember anything that happened while you were getting it. That's why they call it "milk of amnesia."

Thanks for the info! Any chance you could film the actual anesthesia process? I'm considering surgery soon and it would help to know what to expect. Thanks so much!

Did a hospital internship this summer and all the bottles of propofol in the pharmacy looked so tasty!

I don't know what I was given, but I had 2 hand surgeries a month ago. Both times I was knocked out and didn't remember anything at all. I actually like the feeling of waking up and feeling groggy... : )

I woke up feeling fine but soon felt nauseous. Then I felt like I'm gonna hurl and I did as I am still in the hospital. When i got home, I really vomitted a lot more til I have nothing left. Exhausted.

I had it during a Pulsed Field Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation. Yes, no nausea or vomiting after I woke up. Sounds great huh? Not so fast....My bowels were slowed wayyyy down and I was so constipated I was livid! UGH! I HATE PROPOFOL!!!

Did it twice for my gastroscopy and colonoscopy procedures. Both times everything went good, although I was very afraid never awake again for the first time 😄

It works fast, but when I got my first Upper Endoscopy it burned so bad going in (the pain was worse than the IV when it was put in).

Yeah almost killed me I can't have general anesthesia no more. No sedation ether. I can only have regional and nerve blocks. Anything else is more risky than the surgery itself. I have lung problems from asthma and acid reflux so my breathing is not to good.

My dad is a doctor and one time when I was a kid the hospital for I don’t know what reason sent a ton of this stuff home with him and had home sorting his own kits for the patients. The office looked like the back room of a hospital. There were so many of these little bottles. He let me help sort them into the bags but made it very clear that I was not to open anything and that I shouldn’t tell anyone about us having the stuff, which I thought was weird at the time but in hindsight he was probably worried about it getting out and having someone either break in and steal it or there being rumors about him being some kind of drug dealer. He won’t store anything in home any more I think it made him nervous. But, still don’t know why the hospital did it that way for any amount of time. Seems like it would be a liability issue. I have no idea if that was just like a normal thing to do at the time or if there were extenuating circumstances or what. For all I know the hospital was doing something wrong.

Is it normal for it to burn terribly as it’s being injected?? I remember screaming in pain as they pushed it into my wrist then I don’t remember anything after that until I woke up after the surgery was done & I was pissed no one gave me any warning that it was going to hurt that bad. It was horrible
